Introduction

Gather at ES for another casual wines session to drink Lafeur 1996 that we acquired recently and other share bottles. Johnny also throw in a vintage champagne for us to try.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2006 A. R. Lenoble Champagne Blanc de Noirs 89 Points

    France, Champagne

Light golden yellow with lots of bursting and energetic beads but not very fine though. It need some times to open up. The nose is a little shy too, light nutty and smoky. High acidity on palate with good intensity. Nice medium+ finish.

  • 1976 Château Montrose 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Dark core with garnet hue. For a 36 yrs old wines it is still quite youthful on appearance. The nose is dominance by graphite, along with deried fruits, pencil lead, mineral and chalk. Again there is plenty of graphite on palate, with other secondary flavours like pencil lead, earth and dried fruits. Still vibrant acidity , soft chewy tannins and end with medium+ finish.

  • 1988 Domaine Newman Latricières-Chambertin 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Dark and a little cloudy with mahogany hue. The appearance show that it is a mature wines which is quite a contrast to the 1976 Montrose. Dried herbs, smoke, dried fruits & plum with touch of soft barnyard smell. Showing a little sweet fruits on palate and subtle barnyard notes along with dried fruits and dried plums. Soft & fine tannins and medium finishing.

  • 1996 Château Lafleur 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Decanted for about 2 hours. This has a vibrant core, with purple red hue showing no sign of age. Subtle and elegant nose, very floral but still primary and young, with blackcurrant, plum and some hints of minral. Still a little tight after decanting, young and fresh with plenty of dark fruits and mineral notes. Chewy tannins with long finish. Very good intensity but strange that it did not excite me as much as I thought I can be for such a wines at this pedigree as I am expecting more depth and complexity.
