Introduction

A small group of us got together for dinner and some great wine in one of the groups home in Water Tower Place.

I cannot seem to find notes for all of the wines opened. I know there was Champagne, older White Burgundies and at least one great Port at the end.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2001 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    Popped and poured. Sappy, intense, dark briary berry fruit on the nose. Beautiful spice components. Ripe fruits and brown spice on the palate as well. Good structure. Medium body and finish. Good bit of grip. Beautiful acidity. Unfortunately it got overshadowed by the Richebourg flight coming next.

    When this was revisited about 3-4 hours later, the wine had completely changed. Much more intensity of fruit and brown baking spice on the nose and palate. Much more giving on the palate as well, but still with a lot of muscle. Blind I would have called this a Richebourg. Unfortunately my last bottle.

  • 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    Popped and poured, served alongside the 1991 Domaine Leroy Richebourg.
    Darker color than the Leroy. Deep garnet with a slight orange hue around the rim. Powerful aromatics of dark red berries, cinnamon, clove, and a bit of soy. Some sous bois charactor as well. Fruit forward palate with the brown spice notes throughout. Medium body and great acidity. Long finish.

  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Richebourg

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

    Popped and poured, served alongside the 1991 DRC Richebourg.
    A lighter color than the DRC and showing the typical Leroy "cloudiness". Very perfumed aromatics. Red berries, flowers, some wet earth, clove, nutmeg. As with the DRC, some touches of soy. The same components carried through on the palate as well. Medium body, long finish, and great acidity throughout. Absolutely gorgeous wine.

  • 1995 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Opened about 20 minutes before serving. Very powerful aromatics. Dense black and red cherry with quite a bit of earth and brown spice. Equally powerful dark fruit, earth and spice on the palate. A firm mineral backbone. Great texture with a lengthy, gripping finish.

  • 1959 Maison Leroy Grands-Echezeaux

    France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

    Opened about 15 minutes before serving. A powerful, yet elegant mix of red berry fruit, spice, and earth on the nose and palate. Beautiful floral as well. Good density of flavorss on the palate with a long, finish. Vibrant acidity. Outstanding wine.

  • 1990 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

    Popped and poured with about a half hour decant. Very powerful aromatics of dark cherry, currant and plum with a savory herb and earth quality. Chocolate notes with leather and cigar. Great intensity of fruit on the palate with huge length. Drinking fantastic, but with big tannins to help provide a long life ahead. Great balance of fruit, acid and minerality. Great stuff.
