Introduction

We got together to check out the new chef at Bluegrass. Based on the dishes served, the restaurant has not lost a beat.

Flight 1 - Starters (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - White Burgs (2 Notes)

My contributions and somewhat underwhelming this night.

  • 2003 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

The second bottle in three days from my cellar, wet sox/TCA note is a bit more noticeable here but not corked. Muted and lean. I hope my remaining bottles will show better as all the qualities for a great GC Chablis is there.

  • 1992 Remoissenet Père et Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Hoping the 92 Leflaive chevalier like experience but this seems a bit more tropical. Perhaps a travel shock but not showing well. Ripe tropical fruit, apricot and burnt sugar which I really don’t care for in my Burgundy and a hint of anise. Excellent concentration but a bit too fat and little energy. As expected with air, it opened up a bit. I would recommend a couple hours of decanting and preferably served at home, a bit fragile. The 92 is a tricky vintage.

Flight 3 - Oldies but Goodies (3 Notes)

  • 1971 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Expressive nose of caramel, anise, dry black fruits, tar, raisin, cumin, balsamico, hot spices and decaying leaves. The palate is a bit rustic, also intense with slightly disjointed acidity. IMO, a hint of oxidation and VA but the intense expressive nose compensates the flaws and makes the wine still enjoyable. Masculine and rustic wine.

  • 1961 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo Riserva 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Unbelievably, incredibly youthful, tasted blind I would say perhaps 2000. Cherry, floral, tar, leather and roasted nuts. No sediment, clean palate, sweet fruits and still noticeable tannins. The fruit expression is not terribly complex. Not a bad wine but doesn’t feel like drinking a 50 year old wine. I wonder what % is from the 61 vintage.

  • 1964 Giacomo Conterno Barolo 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Total opposite of the 61 Borgogno, soft and shy, an old lady. Dry cherries, caramel, truffle, rose, tar and earth. Soft, sweet and subtle dry red fruit palate and fully emerged acidity and tannins. Although soft, it improves with time without losing the beautiful shy nose. Lovely.

Flight 4 - Baroli - Ginestra (3 Notes)

  • 1990 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Black fruits, tapenade, fruitcake, anise, tart, iron and earth. Very youthful and deeply toned palate, bright acidity and still noticeable tannins. There is nothing coy about this wine also a bit rustic but generous fruits and youth make it very enjoyable.

  • 1989 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Some thought to be corked initially, quite vegetal. With air, black fruits, spicy, fig, dry cherries but a hint of vegetal expression remains. Spicy palate, bright acidity and noticeable tannins. Perhaps an off bottle.

  • 1982 Conterno Fantino Barolo Sorì Ginestra 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

This displays softer fruit expression than the 89 and the 90 Clerico Ginestra. Baked fruits, blood iron, tobacco, leather and slight metallic note. Dry tannins and a hint of metallic note in the palate clips the finish. Nose is interesting but the palate seems slightly disjointed.

Flight 5 - Baroli - Bussia (3 Notes)

Closing

Steve Ward who imports Italian and Argentinian wines brought the 09 Antoniolo Gattinara which the vineyard designation that escapes me. It was showing really well but I stopped taking notes. I have had the 60s Antoniolo Gattina and they age exceptionally well. Another great eveining was had by all!
