Rich & Dana's
Tasted Friday, September 7, 2012 by AllRed with 717 views
There were a couple of open seats so we had an opportunity to fill in and taste with the Friday brown bag group. Wines are tasted double blind in flights, randomly arranged, hopefully, from light to heavy.
Garnet color, showing a bit of age at the meniscus. Aromas of tobacco and iron, with a nice herbal streak and dark fruit, plum. Balanced, with red fruit and plum flavors, hint of roasted herbs. Still has some tannin to resolve; finishes very well. Guessed Bordeaux.

Garnet core. Opens with a saline quality, also beef bouillon and red fruits. Austere, with drying tannins and red fruit flavors on the palate. Most of us thought this was much, much older.

Inky purple crimson color. Aromas of vanilla, red fruit, plum and new oak; has a candied quality too. Full-bodied with searing levels of tannin. Cassis and oak on the palate. Eventually displays chocolate, vanilla and black fruit qualities. Guessed young Napa Cab.
Was shocked to see this unveiled as the 2006 version was enjoyable early after release. Hopefully time will help, but it has an awful lot of oak and tannin to integrate before the fruit will be allowed to emerge. Try again in 2018 perhaps.

Garnet color. Aromas of pine resin, spice and red fruit. Medium-bodied, with flavors of red fruit and a weird, manipulated, oaky grapefruit quality. Austere, overly acidic through the midpalate and finish.

Dusty crimson core, light bricking; quite a bit of fine sediment. Aromas of eathy red fruit- cranberry and cherry, with barnyard and herbal overtones. Balanced, with red fruit, roasted game and herb flavors and a long finish. Guessed Hermitage. Began to tire in the glass, developing a sour edge. Nowhere near as compelling as a bottle tasted a few years ago.

This had been decanted briefly about three hours prior to showing up in this flight. Was told by our hosts that it was showing very well on day two.

Inky purple & opaque to the edge, this was initially quite reticent and thick. Full-bodied with firm tannins and flavors of brown sugar, blackberry and dark fruit. Developed a terrific smoky barbeque quality on the nose and palate. Guessed Petite Sirah.

Dark color. Grapey; a touch hot, but notes of black fruit and incense too. Full-bodied with medium tannins and flavors of dark black fruit and incense with a slightly sweet edge. Nice finish. Would love a ribeye with this. Guessed Syrah.

Dark color with a weird bouquet of perfumed dark fruit and brown sugar with an intense grapefruit note. Medium-bodied, with flavors that follow the nose- grapefruit and dark fruit. Air brings out some red fruit nuances on the palate, but the grapefruit quality doesn't go away entirely.
