Introduction

Great lineup of wines at dinner with Pinkmoon again. This time he brought French wine and I brought US for a bit of a tongue in cheek "Judgement" :)

Really every wine was excellent, but I guess at the end of the night I have to give the WOTN to the 09 Saxum!

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1990 Château Cos d'Estournel Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

We (and the somm) all agreed there was a bit of a cork in the nose, but that didn't show much in the palate. All the same I'm not going to really rate this. Color was nice deep red, fine smooth tannins, and it was definitely settled into the secondary flavors.

  • 2009 Château Pontet-Canet 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted and drank over 4 hours.

This was very good and kept improving as it sat. Big, fruit forward. Buttery red and black fruit, incredibly well balanced, silky tannins. I don't drink very much French wine, and in a blind lineup I think I would have guessed this was CA.

  • 2008 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Decanted and drank over 4 hours.

Now I have to go get some of this to put in the cellar....I thought this was great. Dark cherry, hint of strawberries maybe, meat, spices, excellent balance.

We had this next to an 09 Saxum James Berry, and while the Saxum was definitely more fruit forward, the similarities between the two were striking.

Drinking well now with some air, but will keep for a while too.

  • 2004 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 94 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

Decanted for 8+ hours, consumed over 4.

We recently had the 02 version of this, which provides an interesting contrast. The nose of this is wonderful...perfumed dark fruits, plum, cured meat, cassis. The palate is similar, but then I thought the finish just kind of trailed off, which is the opposite of the 02. Nose and palate were somewhat restrained on that bottle, and the finish just exploded in your mouth.

Drinking very well though, but definitely still give this a few hour decant or lay it down for a couple more years.

  • 2009 Saxum James Berry Vineyard 95 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

Decanted for 8+ hours, drank over 4.

Gorgeous wine, and the similarities to the 08 Deus Ex Machina were definitely there, just more fruit forward I thought. Dark cherry, ripe red fruits, spices, some minerality...excellent balance. There was about a 1.5% difference in alcohol between the Saxum and Deus, but I was hard pressed to tell that.

This definitely needs a longer decant at this point, so give it 6+ hours or keep it in the cellar for a while.
