Introduction

Kevin put on this amazing event and prep the wines to perfection. Thank goodness no corked wines and the Margaux stole the show. Amazing to try all five first growths in one sitting. It will be hard to top in the spring but we can have fun trying!

Wine of the Night Margaux followed by the Lynch-Bages and Latour!

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2003 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Drinking really well now. Shells, lemons, orange peel, and honey. A pop and pour. Medium finish with nice minerality. Drink now.

  • 2002 Bollinger Champagne La Grande Année 94 Points

Wonderful Champagne with citrus, grapefruit, green apple and lemon. On the palate nice minerality. Medium to long finish and complex. Should drink well for a decade.

  • 1993 Château Haut-Brion 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Certainly not a stellar vintage but it showed well. Dark purple still. Funk, tobacco, gravel, sour cherry and complex. Good acidity and medium finish. Two hour decant and it stayed consistant in glass for well over an hour. Drink now or hold for five years.

  • 1993 Château Lafite Rothschild 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Certainly not up to the standards of the 93 Haut-Brion. Herbal, coffee beans, chocolate and red currants. A bit on the bitter side. I liked it right out of the bottle after a two hour decant but lost some magic in the glass over the course of an hour. Drink now!

  • 1995 Château Mouton Rothschild 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Not as good as the Latour. Dark purple. Leather, minerals, blueberries, spice and red currants. Decanted three plus hours and may just need more time to open up. An elegant wine and concentrated. Hold.

  • 1989 Château Lynch-Bages 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Wow wine! Darkest wine of the night. Fragrant wine with tar, forest floor, charcoal, woode and a rustic edge. Long finish and concentrated. No flaws here and still young. 30 plus years left on this wine.

  • 2003 Château Climens 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Rich with apricots, floral and orange peel. A spice edge on the palate and finish. Lacks the right amount of acid to receive a higher score.
