Introduction

Dinner held to celebrate some sort of maturity at 60 years. Couldn't manage a 1960 event so with some number inversion went for 1990.

Flight 1 - Touch of Fizz (1 Note)

  • 2000 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Fine mid-gold, fine mousse. Sherbert, lemon and honeyed notes, medium to full bodied. Some stewed white fruits. Touch of richness but clean and long. Mouth filling. Lovely now but no panic. Great start.

Flight 2 - White burgundies (2 Notes)

Went with a sea bass carpaccio with finely chopped olives, capers and red peppers

  • 1996 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Totally stunning. Excellent bottle, still fresh and vibrant. Decanted about 30 minutes prior. Golden, tinges of both green and brown. Honey, white peach, white flowers. Nuts, hazelnut and almond. Touch of country butter. Mineral too. Great depth and complexity, very long indeed.Exactly what we miss now that aging white burg is such a lottery. Bottles this good have plenty of life left in them.

  • 2005 Dureuil-Janthial Rully 1er Cru Le Meix Cadot Blanc 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Rully 1er Cru

Light gold. Still very fresh. Good touch of lemon, lightly honeyed, marzipan and hazelnuts. Medium bodied, decent acidity. Very good and honest. Great value too.

Flight 3 - Mature reds (3 Notes)

Went with roast veal served with roasted rosemary potatoes and sauteed spinach with nutmeg and butter and an Italian cheeseboard

  • 1990 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Vino da Tavola 95 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Vino da Tavola

First, the nose. It rose out of the decanter and powered across the room. Strawberries, fresh coffee, grilled steak, black cherry. Lovely fruit still, bitter cherry, wild strawberry, black fruits. Hints of leather, warm Asian spices. Maybe just a touch raisined, possibly from the heat. Superb balance, great length, lovely body. This was an ever changing melange of loveliness. My last bottle of this vintage, wish I'd kept more.

  • 1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage

Enchanting dark ruby. Black fruits and dark plums. Definite touch of the farmyard. Cured sausages, blood pudding, leather, smokiness. Some black peppercorn. Lovely smooth tannins. Great length, fine acidity. Hugely complex. Swirls and changes. The fruit still persists. Great wine.

  • 1995 Château Léoville Poyferré 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Last minute substitute for the corked L-B. Plenty of fine dark berry fruit, some blackcurrant but plenty red too. Dances slight and smooth across the tongue. Something almost floral about it. Good balance. Just lacked real complexity after the wonders that had gone before.

Flight 4 - Sweet heaven (1 Note)

Spiced Apple tart

  • 1990 Château Climens 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

In.effn.credible. Just a perfect finish (in all ways). Quite a dark bottle, orange/gold. Rich but the sweetness soars on the wave of acidity. So many lovely flavours to discover - moor honey, burnt sugar, caramel custard, apricots, and citrus fruits. Pineapple cooked with brown sugar. A length so long it's almost still around. If I ever die drinking a glass of wine let it be something like this.
