Introduction

Monday BYOB night at the new Air Street location of the Hawksmoor.

Flight 1 - Flight 1 - Burgundy (1 Note)

Leading off with the Burgundy fearing it will get run over by the Italians. Should go well with the starters.

  • 2002 J.M. Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Carelle Sous la Chapelle 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Great nose, earthy, musty. Also a distinct cream or dairy aroma. Palate holds true to the nose. I think this was the only bottle of the tasting that was not decanted, and probably could have used it. A bit of an acidic bite on the end. It was still opening up by the time it was gone. Good to very good. 92

Flight 2 - Flight 2 - Italy (3 Notes)

Barolo was from magnum

  • 2001 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Bricco Rocche 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Sweet fruit but a little darker than i remember it, not as bright. Still some tannin on the finish. This is a glass of wine you keep going back to for another sip...really good. If it just had a little more freshness to it ... Top 3 wine of the night.

  • 2006 Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici 91 Points

    Italy, Campania, Taurasi DOCG

Good fruit, good acidity. Will be a beauty in time. In the line-up, the surprise performer. Many had this in their top 3 of the night. 91+ today, should improve

    Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia

Wow. Silky smooth, great balance, and great fruit. Seamless, this should age gracefully, but to be honest, was drinking so well already. Great with the steak. My WOTN, and WOTN for the majority of the party of 8. The smoothness is the lasting memory, really remarkable. 95+

Flight 3 - Flight 3 - Bordeaux, Aussie Cabernet, CdP (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Château Grand Corbin 91 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Classic claret, drinking window optimal now and should remain for a couple years. Not much else to report other than solid Bordeaux typicity. Good. Top 3 wine in the line-up.

  • 1998 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige 87 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Agree with other comments that this is full flavor! Nutty, earthly, roasted meat, caramel flavors...a lot going on for sure. 15% alcohol and a bit porty. The fruit has gone downhill a little leaving behind all those meat and nutty nuances, but its just a bit disjointed and medicinal. Lacks freshness and zip. It was fun to have it in the line-up but i think its heading down hill. Interesting, drinkable. 87

Drinking well, but could last many more years. It has started to soften, but you could tell it was made in the most ripe style of the lot so there is more to go. Enjoyable. Scoring difficult because it was the last bottle of the night and the steak was already gone, but I think it is in the ballpark of 89, good.

Flight 4 - Flight 4 - Porto (1 Note)

Closing

Great food, wines and company. The staff really took care of us with each bottle being decanted for us. Hawksmoor is always a quality meal and their bloody marys at the bar are great too. Looking forward to doing this again.
