Introduction

Met up with Phil, Lars, Summer, Nathan, Mark and Matty at Nathan's house for some good food and wine. All the food was great, as was the conversations. Thanks to Nathan for opening up his house and hosting us - we had a great time.

Flight 1 (13 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Belluard Mont Blanc Brut Zéro 89 Points

France, Savoie, Vin de Savoie Ayse

Zesty, nutty, and plush. This had good pear and apple tones with a real nice nuttiness that certainly made it feel like it was slightly oxidized. Liked this a lot.

  • 2010 Domaine Servin Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Another killer bottle. Fresh seawater, herbs, lemon and spice. Drank this with some oysters and it was a super combo!

  • 2009 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Clisson 91 Points

France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

Excellent Muscadet as usual. Drank with some oysters and it was a bit overwhelmed by the salinity of the shellfish. Nonetheless, this has dense and vivid pears, apples and peach flavors with great minerality and acidity.

  • 2010 Domaine Des Vignes du Maynes (Julien Guillot) Mâcon-Cruzille Clos des Vignes du Maynes Cuvée 910 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Cruzille

This was a really interesting wine. A blend of Gamay, Pinot, and Chardonnay, it had a very Burgundian nose with earth, barnyard and spice. The palate was super juicy - figuring the Gamay was really at work here - bright, and plush. Really liked the character of this wine...definitely a unique cuvee.

  • 1999 Antoine Arena Patrimonio Carco 91 Points

    France, Corsica, Patrimonio

Brambly nose with some sour cherry, cedar and tobacco. Palate still had some fine tannins on the end, but the flavors were nicely composed. Certainly a rustic wine; nice earthy, smokey, with vivid tobacco elements. Really nice stuff.

  • 2006 Heart & Hands Pinot Noir 89 Points

    USA, New York, Finger Lakes

Tasted blind. I thought this was Trousseau and was happily surprised to see it was actually from the Finger Lakes - a place I have zero experience with. The color was opaque and the aromas were earthy, green and floral. The palate had zippy acidity and nicely composed floral, meaty and red fruited tones. Really good.

  • 2009 Emmanuel Houillon (Maison Pierre Overnoy) Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin 93 Points

    France, Jura, Arbois Pupillin

Great bottle. Nose had great lemon, dill, almond skin, and a subtle peachy note. The palate was killer with bright acidity and flavors of peach, pear, apple and floral notes woven together in a complex package. Rocking stuff.

  • 2001 Jean-Paul Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

From magnum. Interesting aromatics of earth, raspberry, plum, and wet stones. The palate was rustic and seemed to have some nicely developed secondary and tertiary flavors of herbs, stones, earth and dark fruit. I don't have a lot of experience with older Beaujolais, so this was really fun to try.

  • 2005 Henri Jouan Morey St. Denis 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Still drinking in a really good spot. Beautiful aromatics filled the glass with dried rose petals, underbrush, mushroom and dry-aged beef. The aromas alone were intoxicating. There's no question, to me, that qualitatively this wine hits well above the village level. The body of the wine was quite light, but the flavors were intense. Great red fruit, florals, mushroom and minerals combine together seamlessly. Great stuff.

  • 2006 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

This is a meaty, rich, monster. The nose seemed to have some serious oak influences as it had a toasty/mocha edge to it. The fruit was gorgeous on the palate and combined nicely with a dense meatiness that I loved.

  • 2009 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

This was slow-ox'd for about 2 hours before consuming. The nose gave off some heat and I wonder if decanting this would have helped. Despite the heat, it had lush blackberries, cured meats, subtle anise and olive aromas. The palate was quite nice, albeit appropriately immature. Dark and dense, this is a big, meaty, powerful Cornas and seemed a bit more polished and modern than other vintages. I'm figuring it's more of the vintage than the producer, but it's interesting to note at least. Will bury my remaining bottles for quite some time.

  • 2000 Eric Texier Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Thought this showed very nice. Medium-weight with nice aromatics of meat, violets, blackberries and cherry. Drinking in a good spot now, but seems to have good acidity and weight to last a good deal longer.

  • 1988 Jacques Puffeney Arbois Vin Jaune 95 Points

    France, Jura, Arbois

A thrilling wine from start to finish. Its aromas were incredibly pure with lemons, roasted nuts, spice, and herbs. The flavors on the palate were really something with vivid lemon, peach, pear, herbs, and spices. Rich and complex, this just kept evolving in the glass. Would love to track a bottle like this over a week or so.
