Introduction

Another nice tasting event at Handford wines ( http://www.handford.net ) presented by Richard Brazier of Ancient & Modern Wines ( http://www.ancientandmodernwines.co.uk)

All wines were decanted for about 1.5 hours which took its toll on the 82,70 and 66.

In genral LB prooved to be a way lot more than the poor man's Mouton and rewarded our confidence in buying their wines. Very consistent, always balanced and elegant. Unfortunately with the good vintages and lot of the avg ones have gone up in price.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Lynch-Bages 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark in colour, youthful. Quite reserved on the nose, with some oak by products such as coffee, mocha along with a light core of dark fruit. On the palate it is a bit on the easy side, very pleasant, great balance as with al LB wines. The tannin is still evident . Nicol said it very well about this wine, it is nice but doesn’t excite me at all. 90-91

  • 2000 Château Lynch-Bages 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Along with the Pontet Canet this is another of the forward 2000s from Pauillac, but still it could benefit from another 5yrs in the cellar.
Quite a dense dark colour, which goes in hand with the ripeness of fruit that this wine has. They oak is still around but not out of balance, lots of fruit on the nose. A succulent wine, ripe fruit, good tannin, has nice length and complexity and with no harsh element sat all. Good balance and acidity and has a great future ahead of it. Solid. 92-93

  • 1999 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Quite a bit of colour on it still and shows just the beginning of age on the rim. Open on the nose, and pushing to secondary, with good herby, cedary notes light earth. Very classical in style. Decent fruit on the palate from start to finish, good acidity, length but not a huge amount of structure here. Maybe this will follow in the footsteps of the great 85? A beautiful wine to have now and with good life ahead hopefully. 92+ . Quite consistent with our note 2 yrs ago.

  • 1998 Château Lynch-Bages 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Dark colour, little signs of its age. Musty, light nose, on the closed side. Quite a bit of tannin and as the time went by they became dominant and rough and not very giving. Maybe this needs quite a bit more time in bottle but at the moment it is a touch difficult to approach. 90, wait a few years and hope. Unfortunately not much better than when we tried it 2.5 yrs ago.

  • 1996 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Another consistently great left bank 1996 9this is the 4th time we try this wine) ! Quite a bit f browning in colour, looks a lot older than 96. Ever the classical nose and what a beautiful nose. Light earth, dark fruit, cedar, mint. On the palate it is solid, with good fruit, vibrant, good soft tannin, complex and in perfect balance. Simply superb 94-95. Came second on the night behind the majesty of the 85
Much like with the 1996 horizontal we have been to a month or so ago, and we documented in CT, 1996 is a stunner of a year and what great Bordeaux is all about.

  • 1990 Château Lynch-Bages 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Colour is surprisingly on the dark side. Richard Brazier commented that this was probably kept in a cold cellar as other bottles he had tried in the past were more open and felt readier. For us this is the first LB 1990 we have tried so no old notes to fall back to.
The nose is full of dark fruits to start and it evolved quite a few herby, minty and light floral notes as it evolved. Some notes of mocha too that we never expected to find. On this palate it feels very young almost backward, with good ripe fruit as expected of a 1990, but with solid tannin. Still a very good wine with a lot of life ahead but nowhere near to what we expected. 92-93 from us at the moment.

  • 1985 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

WOTN for us and by a huge length for the group.
Quite dark still in colour, a recurring theme in the LB vertical tonight. Ever the lightest touch of brown on the rim. Such a great nose here , open, singing, secondary but with quite a bit of fruit. Cedar, earth, floral and although at sometimes it had a touch too much of a herbaceous character this was only a small flaw. On the palate the wine is some much alive a testament to its longevity, vibrant, good silky tannin, rich gorgeous fruit, intense and very complex. Nice length and really good well kept bottles of this wine are a must buy and definitely worth the £150 price tag and we would look to buy some. 94-96

Much like the 85 Las Cases we had a couple of weeks ago left bank 85s are simply stunning and drink very nicely at the moment and with no signs of letting go.

  • 1982 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Not sure if this is due to bottle variation or the 2 hr decanting took its toll. When we had it last 6 months ago we chose not to decant and we would suggest one avoids decanting this fragile wine.
The nose seemed a bit off putting and definitely was out of sync with the good palate presence of this wine. Unlike on the nose on the palate is very much alive subtle wine and although it lacks the depth and glory of the 85 it still has a good amount of fruit and freshness. Good but not great but we also had a better experiences so not sure how much representative our 91-92 today vs our 93 6m ago is. Came 3rd on the eveing behind the 85 & 96

  • 1970 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

We would suggest no decanting here. The colour is definitely of a 1970s wine, still dark. Quite mild on the nose, with a touch sweetness and oxidation like an old rioja which probably is due to the decanting (almost 2hrs by the time we approached it). Still quite rich on the fruit, very much alive and intense and stands up very well. A great surprise and a solid 92-93 wine. Shame the decanting oxidised it a bit. Even accounting for that this is a very nice wine.

  • 1966 Château Lynch-Bages

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Avoid long decanting here as this beauty is a fragile one and picks up maderised notes of oxidation. That aside this is still a very good wine and a lot of people in the group had this in their top 3. The fruit is there and so is the acidity and soft on the tannin. Still we found it difficult to conclude a rating for this one.
