Finally got a chance to go to Phil's new place. Since he now has a backyard at his disposal, that means grilling time. I picked up a de-shelled lobster from Fish Guy market and Phil grabbed some lamb from Butcher&Larder.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2003 Rudi Pichler Riesling Smaragd Achleiten 89 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

nose: nice and upfront tones of pears, petrol, white fruits, and white peaches. This is lacking some depth to it, most likely due to the vintage.

taste: very good medium body with medium acidity. The mid-palate is somewhat thin with tones of pears, petrol and white peaches.

overall: This is in it's right place right now. It isn't likely to improve much more. A very good riesling that does show off the vintage, but isn't over-ripe at all.

  • 2007 Brewer-Clifton Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills 89 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

nose: fragrant with tones of green apples, minerals, pears, marmalade, and some white fruits. Nice balance, but lacking some depth to it.

taste: Full bodied with medium acidity that is on the noticeable side. Has a nice spine with tones of green apples, pears, marmalade and white fruits. It is really good on the attack, but there is a drop-off on the mid and finish.

overall: If this had more depth on the nose and palate it would be really good. Still, it's a very good chard that tastes like california without overdoing it.

  • 2000 Patrick & Christophe Bonnefond Côte-Rôtie Les Rochains 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

nose: a bit tight with tones of tobacco, dark red fruits, violets, dark berries and a slight hint of funk. Nice balance, but still somewhat primary.

taste: Medium/full bodied with good tannins and medium+ acidity. Favored more dark red fruits with tones of dark red cherries, raspberries, charcoal, and some violets.

overall: This is still on the younger side. It received a 1 hour decant and showed fairly well.

  • 2009 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard 92 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

nose: deep and layered nose, but holding back a bit right now. Still, there are rich tones of dark red fruits, black fruits, blueberries and some black marker tones. Normally black marker tones are a turn off, but it isn't too prominent.

taste: Full bodied with a really good feel. There are chewy and big tannins along with tones of dark red cherries, mineral rich earth, blueberries, and black fruits. Very good depth as well.

overall: this certainly needs a few more years to fully show itself. Well balanced with a lot of really good materials there right now.

Not a bad way to spend an afternoon when you get off work early. A nice day with some good wines, that equals a win in my book
