Introduction

Hard to believe we've had 100 of these gatherings since 1997. The theme HAD to be 100 points, or nearly so, with 100+ $$ price tags. I wanted at least a modest variety of locations and ages, but I gotta say I'm highly biased!! In general: I don't do Burgundy or Italy, so I had to go with what I got. The wines were all decanted for 2 hours or more. We had a 2001 Argyle Extended Tirage sparkler open while we were gathering and it remains fantastic-- no specific notes but in the 92-94 pt range.

Flight 1 - The REAL Beginning of the Tasting (1 Note)

served with 2 types of pate and some roquefort-- WOW!

  • 2001 Château Rieussec 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Still very young, this wine has all the trimmings: honeyed yellow stone fruit, citrus, pineapple, with floral and spice notes. Great with duck liver mousse and some black truffle shavings. What a start to an amazing afternoon!

Flight 2 - The Dry Reds (6 Notes)

  • 1994 Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

This was a great bottle, best Dominus I've had. Aged to perfection with 5-7+ yrs left. Cassis, blackberry, earth, and stone/mineral notes. Great balance and length. No cigar box or pencil, but still notably Bordeaux like.

  • 1997 Joseph Phelps Insignia 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Looking back at my note from 5 years ago:
"#1 of 25 '97's tasted blind on 11/18/07. Just a great combination of fruit, texture, and tannins. The 'ol "iron fist in a velvet glove" cliche. Some wines need a microphone to be heard, this one needs a silencer, it's born to kill. Lots of time left, 94 pts on day 2."
This bottle was just as good, maybe better, but 96 seems about right. The tannins are still impressive but soft. It still has 10 years!

  • 2000 Château Lynch-Bages 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This one just screams Bordeaux, following on the heels of the Cal Cabs. Cassis, black plum, cigar box, pencil, stone, road tar all going on and on... The depth and muscle are there, and there, and... Still has 20 years!

  • 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

This was still a bit tight and definitely the most austere wine of the night. Yet the depth of black fruit and the tannins portend well. It's very muscular and fun to drink even at this stage. Hints of smoke, tar, cigar box, and earth just add to the layers and depth. Next one in a year.

  • 2007 Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud 98 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Strange, no one has written on this in a year -- maybe the 300% appreciation in price? It's still a baby in every way, including the dark red/purple color. It has a soaring nose of roasted black fruit, spice, garrigue, tar, meat, and leather. Another seemingly endless finish in this group. WOW! Wait a couple more if you can...

  • 2008 Cayuse Syrah En Cerise Vineyard 94 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

This has a nice typical dark , nearly purple color. The nose includes blackberry, plum, stone, and flowers. Very nice density on the palate w/ hints of leather and meat. Needs another 1-2 years.

Flight 3 - The Ports (3 Notes)

served with some cheesecake and stilton options

  • 1977 Fonseca Porto Vintage 98 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Cork was soaked, but the wine was not. Medium garnet w/ a hint of brick at the rim, the nose was amazing. Kirsch, Chambord, and other liqueurs with some earth and floral notes. Perfectly integrated! Just went on and on, a real crowd pleaser.

  • 1994 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Vintage 98 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Wow! Here we go again. Deep plum, cocoa/mocha, violet, and stone that just hang on and on. The sweetness is in great balance with tannins and fruit. Could out live us.

  • 1997 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage 96 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

The tasting had to end somewhere and this was outstanding with Stilton and later, my cigar! Dark black fruit, spice, tar, smoke all integrating nicely and lingering like a teen at the mall. No drop off on day 2.

A crazy good tasting... I'll probably never open 10 bottles like that again!
