Leo Turns 60!

It's Greek To Me

Introduction

Leo Sioris invited a gang of 12 to a small get-together to celebrate his 60th birthday. Dinner was arranged with a great local restaurant It's Greek To Me which proved to be a fitting tribute to his Greek heritage. Flighting the wines with the menu was a major challenge and probably not worth the effort as both the food and the wines were first rate. The food was truly extraordinary, and we had an extremely good showing from all the wines. The conversation was non-stop with an occasional stop for short speeches throughout the evening.

Flight 1 - The Wines (16 Notes)

Wines are listed in the approximate order poured. I had six glasses going most of the night and kept the better pours for re-tasting as long as possible. Notes are sketchy as this was first and foremost a celebration of Leo's birthday.

  • NV Bollinger Champagne Reserve 90 Points

    France, Champagne

Jimmy doctored the label (with a picture of Leo), so I can't be sure this is the right wine. Purchased the day of the tasting and showed really well. Fresh fruit, expansive on the palate and a nice finish. Not super complex, but mighty tasty.

  • 2002 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

From magnum. No notes taken, but this showed really well. Not quite as good as the Dom, but close.

  • 2006 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Vireuils 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

No notes, but I really enjoyed this. Expressive nose and packed with flavor (white fruit, honeysuckle, almond) on the palate.

  • 2001 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Showed very youthful. Reserved dark fruit on the nose. Nice weight and balance on the palate, but with extremely compact flavors (dark fruit and tobacco) and strong tannins from the mid-palate to the finish. Short but pleasing finish. I'd be holding these for awhile if I had them.

  • 2002 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Popped and poured, and rocking from the get-go. Beautiful, soaring nose of red fruit and spice. A little tight on the palate, but elegant and balanced. Long, pleasing finish. Just beautiful.

  • 2003 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Pleasing nose of clean, fresh fruit with some mineral notes. Great mousse. Clean, precise and compact on the palate. Shows plenty of ripe fruit on the attack, with acidity building towards the long, satisfying finish. Drinking beautifully right now.

  • 1975 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Soaring and complex nose showing dark fruit, menthol/cut grass, mineral and more. Truly spectacular. A little less impressive on the palate showing tons of structure but with flavors that coat the entire palate and lead to a really nice finish. I think this had been opened earlier in the day, and it seemed to decline over the hour or so I had it in the glass.

  • 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

A weird bottle. No detectable flaw, but something seemed amiss. The nose was pleasant enough with some dark fruit and spice, but in the mouth this was a weird, funky acidic mess. Most perplexing.

  • 1988 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Pleasing nose of dark fruit and menthol. Nice burst of fruit on the palate with just enough structure. Decent length on the finish. Most enjoyable.

  • 1989 Château Lynch-Bages 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

This showed as extremely youthful. The nose was reserved/stern with dark fruit and a hint of VA. The taste was excellent, but compact and tannic. Flavors lingered nicely on the finish. Based on this bottle I'd say these need another 5-10 years (which I find surprising).

  • 1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

A rocking good bottle. Popped and poured. Expressive nose giving clean red fruit and dried herbs. Beautiful. Equally great on the palate with a stunning, velvety texture and perfect balance. Flavors are clean with red fruit, mineral and licorice (?). The finish is long and satisfying. Wow, most impressive!

  • 1996 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Expressive and complex nose with red fruit and a variety of spices that kept changing in the glass. Extremely youthful on the palate, with a significant oak presence. More red fruit and spice. Well balanced. Great long finish. Pleasant enough to drink now, but really deserves a few more years in the bottle.

  • 1996 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very similar to La Mouline, but with a bit more complexity. This too showed as young. Most preferred this to the La Mouline served alongside.

  • 1988 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Limited notes on this due to a slight faux pas (blending the '96 with the '88 -- don't ask!). As good as the previous times I have had this with a spectacular nose (dark fruit, spice, smoke) and near-perfection on the palate. Truly awesome wine; thanks to Siggy for offering this one up!

  • 1988 Château Guiraud 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

I had a small pour of this and thought it showed really well. Expressive nose, nice weight, great balance, long finish.

  • 1994 Taylor (Fladgate) Porto Late Bottled Vintage 94 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

I loved this. The texture was just so smooth and elegant. Packed with flavor, but in a controlled way that was extremely satisfying. An absolutely rocking way to finish the tasting!

Closing

We've got a great group of local wine enthusiasts and this tasting was great. Congratulations to Leo on reaching 60 (and as we said at the tasting good luck on the next 60). Wine of the night for me was probably the '88 La Mouline, although the '89 Beaucastel the '02 Dujac and the '75 Pichon Lalande were right there at the top.
