Introduction

Shane knew my love of Cornas, so he arranged this dinner for his place when I was in town. There were 13 of us, which was also going to mean a lot of great wine.

Flight 1 (18 Notes)

  • 1998 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Cuvée Creation 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Nose: Deep and thought provoking nose filled with tones of brioche, leesy tones, creamed pears, baking spices, white fruits, green apples, and a touch of floral tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. There is a real richness while also having some nice power with a leesy base and tones of brioche, creamed pears, white fruits, and green apples.

Overall: This is complex and still youthful at the same time. This was from magnum and had a lighter gold color to it.

  • 2008 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph 90 Points

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

Nose: This is packed with all sorts of black pepper tones, black cherries, black fruits, and some bits of violets. There is nice depth to this, but it shows the vintage.

Taste: Full bodied with nice and chewy tannins. This is all backed up by medium+ acidity and balanced tones of black pepper, spice tones, black fruits, and some violets.

Overall: This shows the vintage in it's readiness and depth. It has a real savory quality on both the nose and palate, but just slightly lacks depth.Still, it's an attractive Gonon that delivers what you want.

  • 2003 Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas La Louvée 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Nose: This is definitely on the richer side with tones of liqueur, dark red fruits, licorice, black fruits, and dark red berries.

Taste: Full bodied with very grippy tannins. This is still extremely young along with rich tones of dark red fruits, black cherries, liqueur, and dark red berries.

Overall: This shows off both the vintage and the producer, but is far from overdone. It isn't ready for primetime yet and does need more years to develop and smooth out.
