Introduction

This was a really nice grouping of some impressive CDP producers and wines. There was a Northern Rhone kicker thrown in at the end for some contrast.

Flight 1 - CDP's (7 Notes)

  • 2000 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. 1 hour decant, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. This was really enjoyable. Very classic CDP style. I love the nose with its floral qualities that emerge after 15-20 minutes. In addition the nose offers smoke, roast meat, wood, steely minerals. The palate is medium bodied, nicely balanced with integrated tannins, smoke, black cherry, charcoal, spice, and a long finish. This wine is just hitting its stride now and should do well for another 5+ years. 92+ to 93 pts.

  • 2001 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée du Quet 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. I can't say I have been overly impressed by any vintage from this producer. This was ok, but not my preference for CDP. Rustic is an understatement. The nose is damp, stewed fruits, prune, raspberry, garrigue. The palate is dank, prune, tart berries, very tart, grippy tannins, woody, garrigue. This got marginally better over an hour and the wood softened a little and took on a cedar quality.

  • 2003 Tardieu-Laurent Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color. 2 hr decant. Drank 1 glass over 1.5 hrs. Nose is nice, earthy, cherry, berry, oak, spice. The palate shows black cherry, raspberry, wood spice, tart fruit, earth, spice, peppery on the mid palate and finish. Lots of wood on this one.

  • 2003 Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Sixtine 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red-purple color. I believe the decant was about an hour, drank 1 glass over 2+ hrs. This was really impressive from the start, but it kept building through the evening and really rewarded those who saved a little. I had this scored at 93+ to start and ultimately this improved to 95pts for me. The nose developed into a beautiful perfume of flowers, potpourri, garrigue, licorice, black cherry, leather, and then the ripe black fruits of plum and cassis emerged later. Wow, what a nose, very complex and aromatic. The palate delivered a softer, velvety mouthfeel with round tannins, concentrated, mulberries, cassis, black cherry, graphite, and a very long finish. Elegant and classy, this was my WOTN.

  • 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark red color. Quite a bit lighter than most of the grouping. 3 hr decant. Drank 1 glass over1.5hrs. This seemed reticent from the start and never really gained any steam. Nose showed garrigue, herbs, red fruits, berries. The palate seems balanced, ripe red fruits, red currants, berry, bright herbs, spice, medium bodied and a bit thin mid and late palate. Definitely underwhelming for such a highly regarded Clos des Papes.

  • 2005 Domaine de Cristia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Renaissance 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red-purple color. 1 hour decant. Drank 1 glass over 1+hr. Nose is predominantly dark red fruits, oak, scorched earth, spices. The palate is energetic, with verve and intensity, bright fruit, black raspberry, black cherry, tart, scorched earth, long finish. Tailed off a bit after an hour. My #3 WOTN.

  • 2006 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red purple color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. New world style. Big nose bursting with blueberry preserves, blackberry cobbler, sweet vanilla, leather, tar, scorched earth, lavender. The palate is equally bold with deep flavors of blueberry, blackberry, herbs, darker, full body, round tannins, nice acids. Long finish. This was a show stopper and my #2 WOTN.

Flight 2 - Northern Rhone Kicker (1 Note)

The Northern Rhone was not included in group voting for WOTN

  • 2007 Delas Frères Hermitage Les Bessards 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Very dark red-purple color. Decanted for 3.5hrs. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This didn't get as close an examination as a few weeks ago, but it was equally impressive. Really nice earthy qualities, blueberries, funk, briar, raspberry, spice box. The palate is concentrated, rich, red, black, and blue fruits, spice, tar, and pepper. Interestingly, I didn't find the herbal qualities of the last bottle. 93+pts.
