Introduction

James Handford in hos usual warm style presented a walkabout in Clos Vougeot allowing us to sample different vintages and producers. We were not impressed and the wines were more 1er Cru at best than Grand Cru. The 2003 with their richness and spiciness were borderline undrinkable to us too.

Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2008 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Red fruits, light smoky feel and a touch floral on the nose. Young on the palate, but with good purity and definition of fruit. A touch austere for burgundy standards , but still a good wine whih is pleasant to enjoy even now in its youth. 90

  • 2007 Domaine de la Vougeraie Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Light bricking in colour, def looks and feels older than an 07. Smoky, mocha notes. We liked this quite a bit at this stage although most of the group didn’t like its more obvious and fruit forward side. Interesting mix of freshness and sweetness. Which begs the question of whether this was heavily chaptalised. Firm, grippy tannin, feels young but still a giving wine. Ripe fruit, a bit built for earlier drinking but quite enjoyable at this stage. – 91

  • 2007 Thibault Liger-Belair Clos Vougeot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Dark in colour. Youthful. Mild nose of cherry still though on the muted side. Good fruit on the palate, on the young side of course with firm tannin. The wine seems to be asleep, especially vs. the Vougeraie 07 CdV. 89-90 at this stage

  • 2006 Jean-Marc Millot Clos Vougeot Grand Maupertuis 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Good colour on this. Light nose of fruit, cherries mostly. Same on the palate too, with good red fruits, good structure but in a way simplistic and lacks depth. Pleasant now and maybe better to have now that later. 90 from us.

  • 2006 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

High expectations here and although it outperformed its peers still not of the level its price tag dictates. At the start it was shut on the nose, very restrained. It developed well in the glass but never hit a high point. Very young at this stage. Still felt in perfect harmony and balance, good extraction here, powerful wine and with a herbaceous side. The new oak is definitely not evident. 92 and second favourite for the evening.

  • 2005 J. Confuron-Cotetidot Clos Vougeot 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Lots of ripe fruit here, cassis, spicy and to be honest a touch overdone and out of balance. Lots of spice and fruit on the palate too and much like the 2003s that followed not a wine that one can have more than a glass as the sweetness becomes too much. 88

  • 2003 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

What to expect from an 03… Stewed fruit, sweet fruit notes on the nose, lots of ripe fruit and spice and too rich for its own good. Very difficult to enjoy this one and would avoid it. A lot of questions in general about 2003 from us . 85

  • 2003 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui 85 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

This is more a 2003 than an Anne Gros wine and like nothing we have tried from her before. Much like the Engel before, Sweet nose, sweet fruit, rich and spicy. Full on sweet and spicy on the palate, herby and medicinal. Difficult wine and not sure how one can enjoy this. 85

  • 2001 Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

A bit cloudy. Light sweetness on the nose, mocha notes, red fruits. Very pleasant on the palate but in a way not coming together. Lacked a bit of balance and harmony. Good rich fruit and wine feels to be at its peak now if we can dear to make such a statement given it’s a burg. 90-91 from us at this stage.

  • 1999 Faiveley Clos Vougeot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Wine of the Night. A bit shy on the nose, but the palate makes up for it. Fleshy, full wine, good texture, grippy tannin and very juicy very 1999. A wine of high quality and with a lot of future ahead. Just about entering its drinking window. 92

Dusty, barnish nose, herbaceous wine. Decent, Good tannin, sweet core of fruit, a bit weird at times. Good but not great. Drink now. 89-90
