Introduction

This was the latest BYOB tasting event at Meritage. The menu was 5 course designed by Executive Chef Russell Klein which he absolutely nailed. Wow! And the wines certainly did not disappoint. There were lots of industry people and friends around, so there was definitely some sharing of wines!

Flight 1 - Tasting Menu Wines (7 Notes)

  • 2000 Louis Roederer Champagne Blanc de Blancs 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. PNP. Drank 2+ glasses over 40 minutes. This was stunning, far better than I ever imagined. This stood up to everything we did in a recent 2002 Champagne tasting. Nose was effusive and fresh, with almonds initially, giving way to toast, white wispy florals, perfumed, apple, and later tangerine, crisp minerality. The palate follows suit beautifully with a core of citrus bolstered by apple and pear, crisp and impeccably clean with focused minerality, toast, lifted, very long finish. This one had me giddy. 95+pts and my WOTN amongst some stellar wines.

  • 2009 Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Napa Valley 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Light gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 30 minutes. Nice nose immediately, wonderful fruits of green apple, meyer lemon, eventually becoming more tropical in the fruit, floral, minerals. The palate is balanced and very elegant, citrus with tropical fruits, crisp mineral, nicely oaked and a little butter give this a nice texture and depth without being overbearing. Medium plus finish. Excellent effort.

  • 2007 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series 94 Points

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 45 minutes. Nose is more bold, citrus, pineapple, oak, sea shells, becomes very floral. The palate is full bodied, crisp, razor sharp minerality, crisp acids, citrus, oak, melon, pineapple, long finish. Third time with this wine and this is what I remember from the initial tasting. Gorgeous.

  • 2006 Saint Jean du Barroux Ventoux La Pierre Noire Flawed

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Ventoux

Sadly this was corked; not horribly so, but clearly. There was enough there to show a promising wine though.

  • 1995 Château Gruaud Larose 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Very dark red color with moderate bricking. Slow-O for 3.5hrs followed by 1.5hr decant. Drank 1+ glass over 60 minutes. Nose shows florals, spice, some funk and earth, graphite, cassis. The palate shines and shows a somewhat more feminine character, lead pencil, charcoal, cassis, black cherry, fine grain moderate tannins, nice acid, a little meaty, underbrush. Medium plus finish. 92+pts.

  • 1995 Château Cos d'Estournel 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Very dark red/purple color. No bricking. Decanted 1.5hrs, drank 1+ glass over 60 minutes. Glorious nose with a wonderful perfume of florals, sandalwood, funk, and spice, red berries, mulberry, currants, leather. The palate is quite nice, but can't back up that spectacular palate to the same degree. Bigger and more bold, oak, black fruits of cassis, blackberry, spice, oak, more firm tannins, leather. Long finish. Between the two '95's, the Cos gets the edge on the nose and the Larose the edge on the palate with both being similar overall.

  • 1994 Warre Porto Late Bottled Vintage 91 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

Dark purple color. Didn't get a lot of notes on this but it was very good. A nice core of black fruit on the nose and palate, the alcohol is fairly well contained, plum, molasses, sweet.
