Introduction

Mark very generously insisted on providing all the wines for this months dinner to celebrate his 60th. As stunning array of wines as I have ever had the privilege to drink and with the usual banter. We were so far off the final red but just shows that very old great wines are just great wines and their origin is very difficult to pick.

  • 1999 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

This gets close to heaven. Green gold colour. Nose soars from the glass , a mix of fresh hay honey and gentle spice weaves together in an unending lacy spiral. Intoxicating. On palate extraordinary freshness tight fruit and drive with an lacy endless finish. Great wine

Flight 3 - Red burgundy (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - Bordeaux (1 Note)

  • 1953 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 97 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

From a magnum. Perfect colour with maturity at rim. Immitial nose was a blast of fine blackcurrant fruit which suggested Bordeaux . Very quickly developed more animal notes and rusty iron suggesting northern rhone. Clearly of considerable age and thought 60's. Developed again and harmonious sweet gorgeous balanced wine emerged.great wine in perfect shape at 60 as is it's generous owner.
