Pale. Briary, licorice aromatics with some slight funk. Light weight, underfruited, savory. This is all about earth and sour, high acidity. Not good at all, a poster child for skinny 2008's.

Light ruby. Pepper and anise. Lighter weight but plenty of interest. Slightly sweet black fruit and herbs. Balanced, silky feel with solid acidity, integrated tannins and some smoke at the end. Really good, seductive and a relatively good value.

Medium ruby. Cedary wood and ripe black fruit with rising spice. In the mouth, the fruit is more red in character and the Indian spices are more prominent (easily the spiciest wine of the group). Elegant weight and feel, lower acidity, quite supple and open now. This has much more early appeal than many 2010's.

Medium color. Exaggerated dill and whiskey barrel nose. Obviously woody base that carries through to the very end. Soupy with little definition of fruit, herbaceous finish. Some soil but this lacks acidity, clarity and focus. Very poor.

Medium red. Attractive scents of char and some perfume. The oak is not subtle here either but neither is it overwhelming. Strong red and black fruit. This is sappy and meaty at the cost of losing some detail. That said, it is quite tasty and approachable, with some charred meat reappearing on the finish. Another wine with early appeal.

Medium ruby. Some wood and a gamy pungency. Lighter weight but gains presence in the glass. Less fruit and more herb and soil driven, but subtle hints of sweetness and smoke. Higher acidity yet still a pretty integrated, smooth mouth feel. Sneaky good, but not quite at Grand Cru level for me.

Deepest color of the tasting. Nose dominated by green herbs. Large scaled and not as imprinted by oak as the '09 Les Chaumes. Round feel, subdued black fruit, acidity noticeably lower than in the Gros Frere Echezeaux, licorice finish. Easy for this level. Good but undistinguished, especially at this price. I did not like the vegetal edge of the 2 Lamarche wines today.

Medium depth. Complex nose of pungent game and anise. Discretely woody foundation. Relatively lush, savory black fruit, strong acidity. Real inner mouth expansion and perfume, excellent persistence. More impressive as it unfolds with a great feel, length, a core of fruit and creosote and anise complexity at the end. This was the one wine that had convincing Grand Cru depth and interest. Excellent although personally, I could do with less wood.
