Introduction

Thanks to everybody for coming over and sharing some great wines, and to William for the amazing meal! It was really fun to see how the different wines worked with William's thoughtful creations, and just as fun trying to guess what the wines were.

Flight 1 - Aperitif, Mousse de Foie Gras with Cornichons (2 Notes)

Flight 2 - Salad of Bacon, fresh apple, avocado, pickled carrot and yogurt (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Müller-Catoir Haardter Bürgergarten Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

Slight tropical fruit notes, unripe peach, citrus blossom, with zingy lemon-lime; med+ sweetness, rich, great concentration and purity, maybe too sweet for apple and bacon salad. Kabinett would have worked better, but this was fantastic bottle.

  • 2011 Domaine de Bernier Chardonnay 86 Points

France, Loire Valley, Val de Loire

Blind dinner Anita: At the table we thought this was a Pinot Grigio or light CA Sauvignon Blanc; turned out to be chard from the Loire! Light, medium low acidity, grassy aspect, light lemon. Very tame and light palate. didn't quite work with the bacon and apple salad.

  • 2005 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch 89 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Blind dinner Anita: Darker gold; creamy, melon, roasted nuts, vanilla, somewhat over extracted and oaky, but beautiful weighty mouthfeel. Too much for the more minimalist apple/bacon salad.

Flight 3 - Schnitzel--breaded fried veal sweetbreads w/red cabbage slaw and lingonberry preserve (3 Notes)

  • 2011 SLO Down Wines Sexual Chocolate 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Blind dinner Anita: this was ripe with black and blueberry fruits, soft and fruity, medium body, medium acidity. This paired best with the sweetbread schnitzel and lingonberry sauce b/c of the fruitiness, the round mouthfeel (the meat was very succulent and rich despite the crispy fried outside), and soft tannins. Interesting bottle, blended grapes from CA.

  • 2009 Domaine des Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) Fleurie 86 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Blind dinner Anita: This was very closed, with faint aromatics of earth and red flowers. Light, sort of austere, dry light tannins, this seemed the opposite of a good 2009 Beaujolais. Did not holdup to the Sweetbread schnitzel with lingonberry.

  • 2005 Nicolas Potel Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Blind dinner Anita: Medium cherry-ruby color; dusty earth, tea, cherry, tart raspberry, violet, touch cinnamon; mouth is intense, mixed concentrated red berries of red cherry, pomegranate, blackberry; lots of stony minerals, iron, and fern and light forest element (nettles?); massive structure with high acidity, lots of tannin, powerful fruit with iron; long tangy tart finish; even still, seems a bit closed and youthful. 92-93. This was a bit too acidic, and tannic for the sweetbread schnitzel (very succulent and creamy meat) with lingonberry sauce. A fleshier, softer wine worked better.
