A really fun night with a lot of wines brought by a very generous Trent -- many thanks, Sir! All these wines except the Brunello were from his cellar. He also cooked a delicious beef wellington. Delectable.
2002 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Deep straw. Mellow citric nose, good freshness, and no oxidation; lemon curd. Palate is soft and resolved, more lemon, oyster shells; no oxidation. Quite delicious and long, but a little "small" for what it is. Ready to roll for sure and a tasty wine.

2002 Verget Chablis Grand Cru Bougros
France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Deep gold straw, edge of green. Deep, gutty nose -- blind, I'd call this as a Meursault; hazelnuts, butter, lemon curd. Palate is very big, burly even, especially after the refined Fevre. Fat, but with firm acidity, and a ton of beefy, saline fruit; more nuts and butter. A serious metallic minerality frames all the fruit; tense. Good length. A very serious and masculine Chablis. Hold another 5 years, minimum.

2002 Verget Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
Gold straw, edge of green. The nose is gutty and earthy, roasted pineapple, wet stones, a little rubber -- complex; orange zest, panna cotta. The palate is similar, steely but rich and round, structured but ready and very pleasing. Good length. An excellent wine punching weigh above its weight class.

2002 Verget Chassagne-Montrachet Franchemont
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Very deep straw, edge of green. Another deep, minerally, caramel nose; cream. The palate is broad and pretty powerful, even a little rustic; lots of caramel and cream -- almost has the flavor character of a good flan. Good length. Nice wine, very much Chassagne compared to the above Puligny.

2002 Verget Corton-Charlemagne
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Deep straw, edge of green. Deep, subtle earthy nose. Salty caramel, oyster shell, buttery brioche. The palate has an extra dimension of depth compared to the villages wines. Saline, panna cotta, caramelized milk (think tres leches). Quite excellent length where a little citrus zest shows up -- lime? Fine framing acidity. Good now and for decades to come. An excellent wine.

1989 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Brand Vendange Tardive
France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru
Yellow amber. Huge, archetypal Riesling nose, packed with mega baking spices, a very specific note of shellfish stock/scallop shell, very saline, Tang powder, orange marmalade. LOTS going on in this nose. The palate is dense, dry (with Riesling sweetness of flavor); more and more and more orange marmalade, orangesicle; terrific weight and density, with an elephant of acidity deftly hidden in plain sight. Extremely long, where a quarry of minerality shows up, finally powering through the ripeness and marmalade. A fascinating note of tobacco shows up on the finish, late. Stellar wine! (From magnum)

1985 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Bricked blood ruby -- a classic red. Wow! A big minty nose of salty beef bouillon, coffee, red plums, and geosmin -- wonderfully complex. The palate is resolved, thinning a bit; pleasing notes of horse piss (it worked here), coffee, and saddle leather. Later, huge wafts of roasted herbs show up on the palate -- a very specific character of this. Medium bodied with good, not great, length. Very nice wine, and super delicious with beef wellington. Drink up. (My wine)
