Flight 1 - Champagne to Start (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 91 Points

    France, Champagne

Ripe apple aromas with an intense toasted brioche character, clearly very yeasty. Dense and lots of powerful start-to-finish. More advanced than I'd prefer, slightly more mature than the best bottles I've had over the past few years.

  • 1996 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 95 Points

    France, Champagne

Ripe apple and pear aromas with some toasty and baking spice elements. Much more fresh than the last bottle I remember from a few years ago, this had great balance, power and concentration from start-to-finish. Incredible textures. This will certainly get better as its rough edges soften a bit.

Flight 2 - White Burgundy (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

Only open approx 30 minutes before serving with a quick decant. Incredibly intense, lush and borderline tropical with some of the seemingly botrytis aromas I've encountered in some other 2006 Leflaives. Huge and lush again on the palate, with ripe peach and guava. A little extreme for me right now, but I expect this will soften a bit in another five years.

  • 1992 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Fill level ~ 3 cm. Intriguing aromatic start with fresh apple and some baking spice, also slightly floral. Reasonably fresh apple flavors, but not quite the same density and power as some great bottles of this wine I've enjoyed in the past few years, although those had better fill levels. Stayed at the same quality level over several hours.

Flight 3 - Red Burgundy from several flights (4 Notes)

Plus a wonderful bonus wine that was certainly from Vosne, almost certainly from DRC, most likely from the 1960s or early 1970s, but impossible to be certain of much else.

  • 1969 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvrées 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Bottle in good condition. Red cherry, plenty of earth and some black truffle aromas. Very elegant, well textured with a meaty, slightly spicy finish. This held up very well in glass, perhaps losing some intensity after 2 hours but picking up more length.

  • 1971 Marey-Monge (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) Romanée St. Vivant 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Marey-Monge label of course. From magnum with a well depressed cork, but it had a firm seal. Fill ~5-6 cm. Served blind. Charming old Burg, but nobody in the group correctly identified this as Vosne-Romanee. Great earth aromas and flavors more prominent than the remaining black and red fruit. Modest spice. Good textures and finesse, but I found it more interesting than exciting. Held up well over the course of several hours.

  • 1969 Maison Albert Bichot La Romanée 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru

Great color, great fill. Open ~45 minutes before serving. Black fruit with aromas of reduced mushroom, some dried herbs and anise. Good balance of fruit and mature evolution with Grand Cru density and great balance. Also held up well over the course of the evening.

  • 2000 Henri Jayer Nuits St. Georges 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges

Ripe and dense fruit aromas with charming spice support. If served blind, I would most certainly have thought this Vosne-Romanee. Again ripe fruit on palate, quite fresh for the vintage. Good balance of red and black cherry, perhaps the black fruit more prominent. Wonderful textures and finesse. It's a rare treat these days to get to taste any Jayer wine, and it's particularly amazing to taste this Villages wine. Thanks, Michael.

Flight 4 - Latour with steak (1 Note)

  • 1970 Château Latour Grand Vin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Alluring cigar box aromas with some leather, black fruit and cassis. Very elegant to start on palate with great textures, more power on finish along with good spice.
