Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 1996 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé

    France, Champagne

Pale yellow. The nose is yeasty, biscuity, and mineral with a little honey butter -- very inviting. The palate is similar with excellent poise, a soft, creamy mousse, and an enchanting mineral sweetness. Good length. Ready. A truly delicious Champagne at a great place.

  • 1976 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Oranging gold. Deep gouttey, brioche, orange peel nose, a little oxidized but that's OK. The palate is huge, with coconut, hazelnuts, and fully mature fruit and good resolution, though the acid is just a bit jagged at this stage. Good to excellent length of orange blossom and coconut. A real treat! Drink up.

  • 1972 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

A remarkably deep color, blood ruby well bricked. The nose is reticent, showing a little dust, minerality, and pomegranate. The palate is much the same, austere, dusty, and red fruit. Tannic. Medium finish. Not a bad wine, it was better with food. Drink up, as this really doesn't have anywhere good to go. (This was popped and poured, so it might have opened with some air -- but I rather doubt it. Seth clearly liked it more than I did.)

  • 1990 La Pousse d'Or Pommard 1er Cru Les Jarollières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Very deep blood ruby. The lovely nose is very fresh, with an immediate hit of orange oil; otherwise, rather reticent with dusty cherry, spice, and tar. The palate has lots of perfume, a very pure rosy, red cherry fruit, and some stern tannins and acid; excellent overall balance. It has very good stony, tannic length. A very fine wine that is ready but will keep and probably improve for years and years.

  • 1991 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Blood ruby, light bricking. What a deep, deep floral nose this has, red cherries, orange blossom, sexy musk; maybe a least bit of heat showing but no problem with that! The palate is BIG and extremely dense with fruit, sweet; a Syrah-like (and off-putting) note of bacon blows off quickly, fortunately. Splendid. Wonderful balance very much in the direction of fruit. Wonderful, floral length. This is certainly the best Pousse d'Or I have ever had, by miles. Ready, but probably even better with 5 more years, and then it will be in its prime for a long, long time.

  • 1993 Domaine Michel Lafarge Beaune 1er Cru Grèves

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Ruby. Pure cherry and roses nose, reserved but very pretty; perhaps a touch of heat -- from the nose, this wine needs time. The palate has good sweetness of fruit, maturing cherry. The wine is stern, but the sweetness is very appealing. Chewy and tannic with excellent framing acidity. Good length. To me, this isn't ready and needs a minimum of 3-5 years yet. An excellent wine.

  • 1985 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Pure ruby, maybe an edge of brick. Extremely deep, gutty, gouttey, spicy sauvage nose. Wild rose and general redness everywhere. Iron filings, foundry smoke, and a bare hint of cocoa. The palate is wonderfully balanced, still a bit tight and firm. More sauvage rosy perfume, Wagyu beefsteak, salinity. Really finely grained and well bred. Excellent, not great, length. Frankly, this could use 10 more years. A wonderful treat! (Thanks Seth and Marty)

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Deep blood. The nose on this is completely involved; cedar, Pinot, intense griotte, a little tar. On the palate, it's a beast, saline, tannic, primary with very firm acidity, unsurprisingly. Hard to evaluate but certainly sound. Closed for business. Check back in a minimum of 5-7 years.

  • 1950 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Viña Real Gran Reserva

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Deep blood, a little brick (stunning color; surely this is a late release...?). The nose is very deep, mellow, tallow and saline plum compote; very well bred. The palate is broad, clean, stunningly pure, and quite Burgundian. Super elegant, full but also delicate. Terrific length, sweet and long. This is sort of one of the better Burgundies here tonight LOL...
