Introduction

Several of us gathered to build and reload some new wine racks. Well, you can't build wine racks and move bottles around without drinking some of them to lighten the load! So, that's what we did.

Flight 1 (6 Notes)

  • 2005 Jeff Runquist Petite Sirah "R" Enver Salman Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, California, Central Valley, Clarksburg

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 1.5 glasses over an hour. Deep nose of blackberry, plum, spice, caramelized sugar. The palate shows a deep, glycerin filled, full body. Black fruits with a dusty texture, medium grained tannins and medium finish. Very good 91+ to 92pts.

  • 2006 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 1 hour. This needed the air time and really progressed nicely developing a deep creme de cassis nose with blackberry, dried herbs, cedarbox and finally an earthy component emerged. The palate is consistent, full body, somewhat firm medium grained tannins that feel they are just hitting they're stride, nice black mountain fruit with layers of depth, spice, dried herbs, cedar, coffee, well integrated oak. This is just hitting peak drinking now. 92+pts. My and group WOTN.

  • 2008 Carlisle Zinfandel Carlisle Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Dark purple/red color. Decanted for about 30 minutes. Drank 1+ glass over an hour plus. This was as good as I remember. Nice earth on the nose, with blackberry, black raspberry, vanilla, spice. the palate is full bodied with lively, consistent black fruits, pepper, spice, just a hair of sweet vanilla, and long finish. Excellent balance.

  • 2008 Ayoub Pinot Noir 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Medium red color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over an hour. Very musky, earthy nose, red berries, black cherry, a bit of perfume. The palate shows medium body, fairly elegant, earthy, raspberry, cherry, fine grain tannins. Burgundian in style, and well balanced, if maybe dominated a bit too much the musky earth or this would score even higher for me.

  • 2001 Château d'Arche 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium gold color. PNP. Drank 1+ glass over 40 minutes. This was a bit reticent to start and gradually opened over about 30 minutes to show some highlights of apricot and honey, just a tad of spice. This didn't have the sweetness, complexity or body of a top Sauternes, but in a great vintage is pretty good.
