Introduction

In store tasting of current release wines with Giaconda people present including Rick Kitzbrunner. Unfortunately only sketchy notes. Overall impression was strongly positive. Great introduction to the wines.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2011 Giaconda Chardonnay Nantua Les Deux 91 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Spicy, luscious and flavourful with good acidity and reasonable length and complexity.

  • 2010 Giaconda Chardonnay Estate Vineyard 95 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

And I thought the Nantua was good. This was more than a notch or two above. Intense aromas of stone fruit and spicy oak. Complex and intense wine that somehow manages to remain completely light on its feet thanks to the oak being fully absorbed by the fruit intensity and acid. Terrific wine. Should age very well.

  • 2011 Giaconda Shiraz Warner Vineyard 93 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Light-medium ruby. Fragant spicy nose with perfumed red fruits. A lighter style example of this wine, reminiscent of Northern Rhone. Good grippy tannin structure that needs a bit of time to smooth out. Different to previous Warner's I've had, due to the cooler vintage, but still very enjoyable and excellent quality.

  • 2011 Giaconda Shiraz Estate Vineyard 93 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Richer, riper, fuller wine than the Warner. Differences said to be due purely to the terroir of the different vineyards. Still nicely perfumed nose with richer and slightly darker red fruit spectrum. Smooth mouth-coating wine with fine tannin and lots of fruit intensity, with the trademark complexity of Giaconda interwoven. Drinking beautifully young but should age well.

  • 2011 Giaconda Cabernet Sauvignon 89 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

An interesting wine. Almost more recognisably Giaconda than Cabernet. Complex nose of mixed berry fruit and earthy complexity. Reasonably light and not overly tannic palate, again with an interesting flavour profile.

  • 2010 Giaconda Cabernet Sauvignon 91 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Again, an interesting Cabernet. This was a bit richer and fuller than the 2011, with more tannin structure and more recognisable Cabernet attributes. Already showing some nice cigar box development.

  • 2010 Giaconda Nebbiolo 91 Points

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Again, almost as much "Giaconda" as Nebbiolo, particularly on the nose. Very good high-acid, high-tannin palate, with nice length and good cherry and cola flavours. It should age well, as good Nebbiolo should.
