Flight 1 (15 Notes)

  • NV Louis Roederer Champagne Brut Premier 92 Points

    France, Champagne

A perfectly matured magnum from Christie's own cellars. Rich, toasty and biscuity, the post-disgorgement ageing really adding extra dimensions.

  • 2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Very charming, fragrant, relatively forward, floral, very attractive, wonderful balance, perfectly absorbed 100% new oak, elegant weight, delicious hint of oak on the finish, a really lovely expression of its vineyard and vintage.

  • 2007 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Wonderful weight and balance, tighter and more closed than the 2007 Clos de Bèze, slightly more oaky (remarkably so), not as forward, very good length, needs another 2-3 years.

  • 2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Lovely fruit, ethereal floral notes, shows its elegant side but is at an awkward stage, quite some tannic power.

  • 2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Lovely balance and intensity, not very attractive or approachable today, quite introverted at present but the underlying quality, energy and intensity are unquestionable, hewn from the rock, there is a roughness that will resolve in 3-5 years. Excellent future.

  • 2005 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

30% - 40% new oak. Very pure, intense and elegant, very charming, wonderful black fruit, hint of the stems, creamy, lighter than the others, very approachable and delicious but perhaps not as profound.

  • 2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

More powerful than the Groffier, more energy, wonderfully together and harmonious, silky and floral, nowhere near as closed as I has anticipated, very winning, a wine of the greatest class and elegance. Will last and improve for decades.

  • 2005 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 100 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Quite a powerhouse of a wine, lots of potential, incredible depth and minerality, energy like a coiled spring, a magical marriage of elegance and perfect intensity, fabulous fruit and amazing length. In no way the closed and surly wine I had anticipated to encounter, but aren't truly great wines great at any age? Perfection. Half a century in it at least.

  • 2005 Domaine Leroy Chambertin 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

The only wine to be (double) decanted tonight. Directly from the domaine, bottle no. 00242 from 1,506 bottles produced. A completely different ballgame from all the others tasted tonight. Incredible power and depth, tarry and concentrated, quite unyielding, amazing weight and tannins. A blockbuster if I have ever encountered one in Burgundy. Inspires respect rather than love. It is almost as forbidding as its price tag. Dare I say that I find this slightly overdone? I certainly prefer the Rousseau.

  • 1993 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Not entirely clean, a bit funky, many thought it was slightly corked, rough and raw; Antony Hanson suggested that it just had an interesting aroma of mushy peas - a suggestion which the group happily embraced!

  • 1993 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Lovely freshness and fruit, has a herbal, almost minty quality, good tannic backbone, elegant but fleshy, amazing depth and energy, long but also slightly austere, not sure whether it is really ready, seems more masculine than the Chambertin in this vintage, tannic, will it come round?

  • 1993 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

A majestic Chambertin, quite tannic as many 1993's are, deep and stately, wonderfully fresh and lively, riper fruit than the Clos de Bèze 1993, very elegant, linear and pure, a very stylish wine, beautiful.

  • 1993 Domaine Denis Mortet Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

A bit tough and stiff, seems a bit reduced on the nose, powerful and tannic, perhaps a slight lack of acidity for balance, hint of chocolate, not easy to assess.

  • 1983 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

On the light side, quite tannic still, fully mature, good wine, but neither the charm, nor the weight or the stature of a great Clos de Bèze.

  • 1969 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin 99 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Lovely colour, fully mature but not bricked through; fully mature nose, gamey; elegant, intense, sweet fruit, good tannic backbone, excellent balance, creamy and rounded, supremely stylish; long. A profound wine, an amazing 1969, very pure, still linear, haunting aromatics but also structurally sound. Only a hint of dryness on the finish stops it from getting a perfect score.
