Introduction

This was a lovely dinner with Kent at Bella Trattoria with some excellent wines that he provided and some excellent leftovers that I had.

Flight 1 - New wines from Kent (2 Notes)

Both very good, but neither excellent. The 07 Climens seemed like it was mildly damaged in some way.

  • NV Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    (4/30/2013)

Pale yellow-green color; fresh non-oxidative nose (surprising...), apple; palate is fresh, simple, balanced, short; finish is short, apple. This is a decent balanced and enjoyable champagne as a daily drinker, but I would not buy since it does not have complexity or unique character. 88-89

  • 2007 Château Climens 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

    (4/30/2013)

From a half. Orange color; nose is a combination of icewine-styled pure white fruits with more mature dried fruit, spice, vanilla, oak; palate is medium-full bodied, medium sweetness, decent but not over-arching acidity, already has a bit of aged character such as caramel, balanced, medium persistence; very ripe fruit, medium finish. This bottle was much darker than my halves, and I suspect that it may be somewhat heat damaged (bottle was from Premier Cru). It was enjoyable but too rich for Climens, lower acid than expected from others' notes, and showing mature notes much earlier than expected (and darker than expected). It also may be entering an awkward stage given its age (though that wouldn't explain the color). Decent today, but would not buy at the price. Hopefully mine show better given their lighter color. 92
Day 2: Showing more baking spice on the nose, lovely fruit on the palate. Very enjoyable with food, but assessment above still holds.

Flight 2 - Leftovers

I can't link the wines to this event since they are already linked to another event, but the wines that we drank were 2004 Yquem and 1976 Yquem. Both excellent.
