Introduction

I have little experience with Rioja and this tasting provided the opportunity to taste some wines and get an introductory feel for the region.

In general, I was left scratching my head with the region. Do people consider really consider Rioja reds as world-class that compare with the best of Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Piemonte? I found the overwhelming oak-driven nature of these wines to be a complete turn-off, though, admittedly, I am more oak-averse than most people. I knew going in that barrel aging was a key component to the reds of Rioja, but I wasn't prepared to have my palate assaulted by all of the oak that was present in most of these wines. For this reason, I don't see myself pursuing reds of this region at this time. On the other hand, to their credit, every single wine in the tasting exhibited very good acidic balance which I greatly appreciated. The lone white of the tasting was interesting and enjoyable and the Muga Rosada was quite nice and a real bargain.
