Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2004 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark core with aged crimson rim; some ripe strawberries and cream off the bat, some oak, brambly fruit, red and dark, a green note which told me '04, Cameroun cigar, green coffee beans, nose seems like a mix of new and old school; velvety mouthfeel told me this was N. Rhone Syrah, a little black pepper, vanilla cram, plummy, dark cherry, ripe and seemingly a warmer region; not exactly as refined as you would expect from Cote Rotie but this was a nice wine; this probably needs more time; terrible QPR; called '04 Chapoutier Ermitage; 91+.

  • 2007 Castello di Verduno Barbaresco Faset 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Dark crimson core with orangey crimson rim; classic notes of tar, dried roses, cherry, menthol, really assertive nose; medium+ body, resinous tannin though not drying or real grippy, a little rustic, strong cherry, cedar, some food brought out some beautiful herbs in the wine; some thought this was older but I feel this needs a couple more years before it turns into a stunner.

  • 1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark core with sediment and an orangey crimson rim; aged notes of charcoal and hints of soy dominate the nose, there is only a little bit of dark fruit that is decipherable; cedar, tangy berry, ripe, smooth texture, gripping tannin, fig mincemeat and gaminess came out with more airtime; reminded me of an older Barolo but the tangy berry fruit didn't make sense; nose was weak but the palate was much more deserving of a higher score; 90+.

  • 2001 Famille Brunier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine La Roquète 87 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Darker core with light red rim; stank on the nose with sun dried tomato, red fruit, kind of Burgundian, and a hint of menthol; ripe red and dark fruit, not a ton of character- a little one dimensional, a good Grenache filled finish made me call '01/'04 CdP.

  • 2010 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Bright dull ruby; pretty nose of roses and candied red fruit; sweet red fruit with a great underpinning of minerality, structure coming together (needed more airtime), sexy yet taut, sour cherry, plush with a hint of the new oak on the finish; really tasty; 92-93.

The La Turque was a little above the suggested price point, thanks Matt.
Both CdPs took me to Piedmont initially for their aged characteristics.
D'Angerville was non-blind as we all split the bottle cost.
