Introduction

Reds decanted between 1 and 3 hours. Wines were tasted blind except for the chardonnay. This was very interesting given the variation across the flight. A great selection by all.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2010 Frog's Leap Chardonnay 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I liked this chardonnay - if I did not know it was chardonnay, I would have suspected it was a Riesling. Smooth yet grassy with a hint of spritziness. Relaxing and balanced.

  • 1999 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Mint/Eucalyptus in the nose and a hint in the mouth too. A nice enticing nose. Lighter on the tannins 5/10 with a bias towards acidity on the palate - maybe a touch out of balance - but not young 'heat' given its age. Smooth with a moderate to short finish. Not as great as I was expecting it to be but a good wine. Not a classic fruit bomb Napa tannin cab.

  • 2010 Hourglass Cabernet Sauvignon 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Strong fragrant fruit - cassis and vanilla and even a hint of caramel. The vanilla comes through nicely on the palate too. Dar red - tannins 7/10 - A very enjoyable Napa Cab - very, very drinkable so be careful.

  • 2010 Bryant Family Vineyard DB4 95 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Enticing nose with very strong tannins 9/10. It can clearly lie down for a few more years. Dark red strong bodied with a moderately long finish. On the palate this is quite dry from the middle onwards - quite a contrast with the Hourglass we just tasted. It almost starts as a Napa Cab and finishes as a French Cab.

  • 2006 Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 93 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder

A hint of petroleum on the nose. Strong tannins and dark fruit up front - could lay down for a few more years still. Tannins 8/10. Dark red and inky. Great depth to the wine with spiciness which made me think this has some Cab Franc in it (although I do not believe that is so)

  • 2009 Altvs Cabernet Sauvignon 87 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark red - taste on the younger side with less tannins the rest of the flight tonight. 7/10. Not highly extracted and simply smooth

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 2001 Joseph Phelps Insignia 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Not as high a rating as I gave this last time. It might have been the order of the wines tonight. Very light on the fruit with the Petit Verdot coming through strongly. Still a strong body with life in it. Complex and drinkable - slowly.
