  • 2006 Domaine Jean Collet & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Golden yellow; waxy nose of melon, banana, and ripe tropical fruits, rich and full with no chalk, alcohol; called '06 Chassagne because I know how ripe this vintage was but was really surprised to find this as GC Chablis; others thought this was a white Rhone; not a bad wine just atypical.

  • 2005 Château Malartic-Lagravière

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Dark maroon with crimson rim; red currant, cigar, dark chocolate, tobacco, elegant; good balance, very mineral, a sharp note on the finish; very good.

  • 2007 Domaine Durand Cornas Confidence

Dark purple core with light purple rim; sweaty leather, black pepper, purple fruit; lighter, elegant, not very rustic, dark cherry; good.

  • 2009 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Light purple ruby; sexy new oak, tart red fruit with sour cherry, rose, deep, rich, Asian five spice; deep and rich on the palate while still being extremely elegant, silky, blue and darker pinot fruit, syrupy, rose; drunk entirely too young but what a treat!; gave this some extended airtime and this put on some welcomed weight and structure so I'd recommend air for at least 2 hours if you open now; ideally don't touch this for at least 15 years. 94+ with loads of potential.

  • 1998 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Light orange crimson; horsey, radish, red tart fruit; sweet and sweaty, nice Grenache tannin, full and rich; thick burly and syrupy after the Tres Vieilles Vignes (context) but this was classic Pegau and so true to what it is; this bottle still had some youthfulness to it capable of another 8-10 years.

  • 2007 Fattoria Petrolo Galatrona 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Dark core with garnet rim; new oak, cocoa, raspberry, currant; softer, fine grained tannin, pretty red and dark fruit, cedar; Spanish in a way with its modern feel but this was delicious; nailed it blind.

  • 2006 Argiano Solengo Toscana IGT 92 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Dark almost to rim, slightly cloudy, very extracted; smell of the sea, seaweed, red and dark fruit; rich, cedar, grainy tannin, nutty oak, dark fruit; young and very solid; seemed like coastal Tuscan (Maremma/Bolgheri) but rode the coattails of someone who suggested Solengo.

  • 2003 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Medium dark core with large orangey rim; sandalwood, menthol, cherry, dried rose, nutty; sour cherry, sandalwood, pure cherry, menthol, still compact but a pleasure to drink; so classic; called Einaudi Nei Cannubi- should have listened to the oak signature.

  • 1986 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Cloudy dark core with orange rim; tobacco, compost, Bordeaux funk is blowing; beautiful fruit, dense, black currant, lots of pencil lead, mineral, so balanced and lots of life left; absolutely delicious; called Leoville Las Cases because of the balance and lead.

  • 2004 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Translucent orange crimson; sour cherry, some green, Band-Aid, lots of funk; sweet sour cherry, lighter mouthfeel, elegant; greenness of the vintage was very manageable in this bottle which I enjoyed quite a bit.

  • 1997 Allegrini La Poja Veronese IGT

    Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT

Black core with brown rim; barbeque sauce, soy, cooked stewed tomato, rusty; brown cooked fruit, caraway, not pruney, Worcestershire sauce, though there was freshness on the palate even though this was aged possibly prematurely, seemingly cooler climate; fairly tasty but not showing its best.

  • 2002 Camus Pere & Fils Charmes-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Light orange rim with lake core; something reminiscent of McDonald's hamburger on the nose with pickles, a meaty quality, and the onions are in there too; slightly tinny on the palate, orange and light red fruit; called blind; really overmatched on a day like today; this bottle seemed more like an 87-88.

  • 2002 Camus Pere & Fils Chambertin 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Carmine core with orangey rim, some age; tart cherry, good not great, almost some iron in there, a little simple; overmatched by others today; very similar to last wine; called Camus.

  • 2007 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 97 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

2nd bottle; dark red with dull ruby rim; intoxicating perfume of sexy new oak, perfumed, violets, vanilla, black pepper; so layered on the palate, delicious, dark fruit, so long, tasty; more of an elegant vintage where the fruit and richness were in harmony with the oak; young but drinking so well; should prove to be 100 points eventually; was tasting and craving this 3 days later at 10:00 AM like a crack fiend.

  • 1998 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Cloudy with lots of sediment, dark red with large meniscus, looks very aged; sour and sweet red fruit, sappy, guava; aged and probably not aging very gracefully but the sappiness is very true to Ponsot CdlR; there were flaws but this wine still had a rustic class to it and was overall tasty.

  • 1989 Château Haut-Brion 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

Crimson almost to rim with tiny rim shows its youthfulness; pencil lead, gravel, funk, cigar, blue cheese, such a layered nose; rich and deep on the palate with cigar, fine tannin, red currant, blue cheese, classic Bordeaux funk; absolutely delicious and extremely balanced; probably deserving of a better score but for my tastes Bordeaux rarely offers a soul satisfying experience and this is about as good as they come.

  • 1989 Château Angélus 93 Points

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Dark crimson with 1/4" meniscus; green pepper, compost, sandy, tobacco, limestone, red currant, nice tart red fruit but the minerality is playing lead today; showing more age and drinking closer to peak than others have suggested with their bottles; really incredible stuff, though.

  • 1990 Château Angélus Flawed

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

2nd corked mondo bottle of the night! Damn! Having had this before I was extremely disappointed because this could have been a contender.

  • 1999 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

From magnum; dark golden; nutty, walnut, lanolin, green apple, red apple, tons of honey; lower acid at this stage but still great freshness, some mineral, nut oil; absolutely delicious as I expected; this may have been a mag and the last wine but this bottle emptied faster than any other.

Closing

Some mixed opinions as far as WOTN. Some said Roty Charmes (I thought this was extremely too young), others Haut-Brion (in prime drinking but not exciting), but I considered the La Mouline (young but drinking so well) the best wine at the table.
