Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Popped and poured. Robust peach and ripe apple aromas with nice floral elements, good spice and some lemon zest. Similar cross-section of flavors with lots of popping energy. This has Batard's classic fat and lush character, while also very well textured and elegant. Very impressive.

  • 1999 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Open ~ 30 minutes before serving, then kept in glass for close to 2 hours. Very dark and dense to start aromatically, but with charming floral notes. More black than red fruit on both nose and palate, well supported with subtle baking spice throughout. Opened up with more air, but I expect this wine's best years are still well in the future.

  • 1998 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Charming perfumed start with mature red fruit, slightly sweet baking spice and hints of emerging earth and mushroom character. Everything well balanced.

  • 1998 Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Open ~ 2 hours before serving. Great fresh and powerful red and black fruit combination with sensational spice that doesn't show any pronounced new oak influence. Dense, meaty and powerful from start-to-finish, but with the structural elements also in good harmony. Second time I have had this wine this year. It is in a great place now and I'd expect it to be great for at least 5+ years, probably 10 years.

  • 2002 Domaine St. Martin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Came across as somewhat muddy. Brett is well past the point where it adds character, clearly coming across as a flaw in this bottle.
