Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 1998 Ashton Hills Riesling 87 Points

Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Adelaide Hills

Honeyed, toast and some light oxidative notes. The palate shows off lots of honey - is there some botrytis here? Decent but fading quickly.

  • NV Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Sparkling Duck #4 89 Points

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote

Florals and spice, cherry and blackberry. Medium bodied with quite nice balance - not overly exciting but it takes a fair bit to do so for me with sparkling reds.

  • 2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Intriguing nose - peppery spice, chocolate, violets and some cherry. The palate shows off lighter, brighter red fruit and a lovely mineral core. Super length. This improved rapidly in the glass and I came back to it at the end of the night and it was singing beautifully.

  • 2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Mazy-Chambertin 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Raspberry, earth and some charcoal - it is really very earthy in fact. The fruit has some density to it, but there is good structure wrapping around it. An animale earthiness gives the palate interest at the same time, but it is less approachable than many of the other 09 Rousseau wines right now.

  • 2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Lovely, quite intoxicating perfume of violets, roses and some stemmy influence. Elegant and poised palate, it's really approachable right now, with the perfume and excellent balance making it a treat. Not extremely deep but it's beautiful regardless. I revisited at the end of the evening and the perfume hadn't faded at all, it was just as enthralling and charming as the first glass.

  • 2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Expressive and wonderfully perfumed aromas - slate, musk, cherry, earth and floral notes. The nose draws you in but the palate keeps you there with outstanding balance and incredible detail in the fruit. A mineral note persists and stretches the palate length out. The very last sip of this spectacular wine was the best.

Flight 8 (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

With a bottle last year that was almost impossible to live up to, this came close but it does feel like it has tensed up a little bit, drawing away some of the superficial otherworldliness but leaving just as much interest and potential. That said, the longer it was in the glass the more it opened and flourished. There is licorice, oak, spice and smoke combined with a dark floral touch. The palate is just as powerful as I remember it, with force and opulence, reigned in by precise acidity. So, so close to the last bottle but ever so slightly behind - it was incredible by any measure regardless.

  • 1998 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Probably just a touch cork affected - not enough to ruin it, but enough to ruin it.
