Very robust and large scaled Champagne, no wallflower here. Lots of strawberry, ripe apple and nutty notes throughout with chewy textures. I liked this, while others liked it a lot more.

Very charming and ripe apple and pear, slightly more mature than I hope for in 2004s today, but still within a good drinking window. Nice Ramonet mint hints always help.

Ripe apple and pear with lemon peel and floral notes. Ripeness is almost tropical but the structure and coiled tightness make this almost austere. Needs lots of time to show its excellent full potential.

Fate made us order this bottle, having just tasted Anne Gros Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux for the first time this morning. Very classically Vosne with woodsy spice and hints of maturity on the edge. Very concentrated and elegant for Villages level wine.

We are very bad people ordering and opening this wine so young. Dense and powerful, but in no way is this brooding or backward. Great charm and concentration with meaty spice and fruit that might have made me believe this was Roumier's Bonnes Mares. Each smell/ taste was better than the last.

Very nice black fruit with a touch too much new oak protruding at this stage, with fruit that is very powerful and starting to mature. Very good flavors, imperfect balance.

Very good, very ripe black fruit dominates nose and palate. A bit fat to start, acidity more prominent in middle and finish. Needs more time to integrate and balance and lose some baby fat.

Barely given more air than a pop-and-pour, this was very forward and accessible, clearly in a very good place for current consumption. Prototypically Vosne with lots of whole cluster spice. Very long and persistent with some mushroom emerging on the edge at the very end.

Apple, lemon, very chiseled and mineral driven with long finish showcasing lemon and lemon peel.

Way too young. Excellent concentration and energy, a bit backward for now, perhaps a bit reduced as well.

Lots of red and black fruit, with alluring baking spice support. Surprisingly approachable now.

We tried to give this some decanter/air time, but of course it didn't get enough. Great spice driven aromatic start, that was almost Vosne like in its floral and spice support for black fruit and liqueur hints. Dense and black on palate, ripe but clearly balanced and powerful with plenty of energy.

Similar to the Chambertin also opened at dinner tonight, slightly more forward, slightly less power and density, but also seemingly more coiled and energetic.

Good fruit but still a bit oaky on nose. Palate was clearly more mature with good concentration but a little short and getting tired.

A far contrast to the same wine from the 2001 vintage, this was surprisingly approachable for a 2005. Sweet black fruit aromas with a kirsch note. Massive fruit flavors with so much density, minerality and sweet tannins so that it is harmonious already now with very interesting long-term potential.

Plenty of red fruit with charming spice peaking out but this came across as slightly awkward right now but great medium-term potential. Didn't quite get enough air, how could it? Not as interesting as same wine tried last month in SF.

Great textures support lots of red fruit and subtle, nuanced spice. Not the right wine to end the evening, but a wonderful bottle showcasing great elegance for the vintage.

Lemon and lime with some stone fruit hints. Seemingly more ripe on nose than palate, where it comes across as chiselled and lean with great power for Villages wine.

You don't see this often on a wine list so we jumped at the chance. Incredible power and density with the minerality and acidity that made you think this was almost chiselled out of limestone. Great stuff here, just of course too early to fully appreciate.

Slightly tropical with lots of power, with signs of marcona almond and lightly toasted brioche.

Ripe and powerful apple aromas with a charming floral start along with sweet spice. Broad array of orchard fruit flavors, ranging from ripe through cooked and nicely spiced. Faint sweet hints add an intriguing nuance. Very good+.

Lots of apple and pear. very powerful, but coming across as a tightly wound coil. Cellar at least 5 more years, with 92+ potential.

Black fruit with sweet spice. No green notes here at all. Moderate weight and length, with very good balance. Probably best now through 2020, so early drinking for Rousseau Chambertin.

Black and red cherry with woodsy spice and a slightly backward, meaty character. Needs more time in the cellar. Very good, but I wish we had ordered the Brulees instead.

An incredibly memorable experience and an all-time highlight of my wine travels. Notes on a few wines, written from memory a few days later.

Slightly corked.

Slightly floral with good red fruit aromas. More black cherry on palate, good spice, good structure throughout. Very good intensity for Villages level.

Earthy black fruit aromas, moderately ripe. Same again on palate with a rugged character, somewhat firm and rustic.

From magnum. Black cherry with savory herbs and spice. very ripe for 1998 Volnay, with equally robust structure. Firm, powerful and long. Very good now, with upside.

2007 Domaine & Selection Meursault Coche-Dury

Bright, slightly nutty, great energy. Vibrant and kinetic for a Villages level wine, this will benefit from a couple of years to mellow.

Slightly floral with lemon and lemon peel aromas. A bit firm and austere, but opening with more air. Probably close to peak drinking window now.

2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
(4/26/2010)
This obviously would have benefited from more air/decanter time. Woodsy aromas with lots of dense black cherry and espresso. Firm and dense on palate as well with lots of power and meaty character. Long, powerful and teasing us with its potential.

1998 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares 90 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
(4/26/2010)
Very interesting wine that shows both Mugnier's elegance and understated style, as well as Bonnes Mares' firmness and power. Slightly brooding or backward aromas with subtle spice and black fruit. Flavors start with subtle or austere red fruit, picking up darkness, weight and density through to moderately long, more powerful finish. Very nice, but hard not to prefer the Roumier 1998 Bonnes Mares in the next glass.

1998 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 95 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Much like a couple of bottles tried approx 6 months ago. Dense, meaty and powerful fruit but with great balance and grace. Super length. This wine is clearly still improving and will drink well for decades if well stored.
