Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

This was wonderful when opened and got better and better with air. So much zesty, high toned fruit: lemons, apples and lime, but other complicating flavors as well. A bit of yeast, seashells and mint as well. This had a lengthy finish that slowly faded and then seemingly whiplashed back for more. This expanded on the palate nicely and left a pleasant lip-smacking sensation. Really seemed to have a lot of energy for a 2009. This and the 2012 Alzinger kept competing for my white wine of the night.

  • 2012 Alzinger Riesling Smaragd Dürnsteiner Hollerin 94 Points

    Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau

A beauty of a wine to just hold and smell. Lots of exotic florals and spices (jasmine and ginger immediately come to mind) compete with each other, along with a "gun-metal" and mineral note. This really pierced the palate in a good way (I wrote "pleasing painful persistent palate piercer"). This was neck and neck with the 2009 Raveneau MdT for my white wine of the night. In the end, the Raveneau won, but not by much.

  • 2001 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

This was a wonderful showing. Still youthful and zippy, with those electric 2001 acids. There is a hint of creaminess and a bit of baked apple notes that suggest a bit of age, but this is overwhelmed with youthful, tart, saliva inducing, freshness. Super length and palate cling. Fanstastic wine that is still on the upswing.

  • 1993 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Still ridiculously youthful an unevolved. Monolithic with lots of apparent fruit, but the fruit is hidden underneath its towering structure. Tough to evaluate right now and thus unrated. Try again in another 20 years.

  • 2004 Domaine Truchot-Martin Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbes Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

Light strawberry in color. Delicate wine and very light on the palate. Cherry and strawberry fruit, with some hints of rose petals and something "leafy". A bit of a lactic sensation as well, which detracted, but a fine well-detailed wine.

  • 2001 Vieux Château Certan 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

A bit monolithic right now and in need of some time. A bit fruity, along with some coffee, cocoa powder and oak spice. This became a bit more expressive of day two, but still too unformed at the moment.

  • 2005 Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos Colares Reserva Tinto 92 Points

    Portugal, Lisboa, Colares

Lovely, old-school wine here. This is not so much about the fruit than the secondary flavors of leather, earth, coffee and iron. Light bodied, but still makes a statement. Zippy acids on the grippy finish.

  • 1942 Bodegas Riojanas Rioja Viña Albina Reserva 94 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

This bottle was in almost unbelievable condition. Top of the shoulder fill level with an obviously older cork, but one that looks like it might be 40 rather than 70 years old. Good color, still holding a healthy ruby glow and a light garnet rim. This really took to air as it unfolded with multiple flavors and scents... none of fell into the caramel or dill spectrum, which older old-school Riojas can acquire. Earth, leather, dried red fruits and hints of brown spices. Velvety and long the palate. A wine that just puts a smile on your face with is weightless salvo of secondary and tertiary notes. Superb.

  • 1976 Domaine de l'Hermite Hermitage 96 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

My red wine of the night. So expressive, so fragrant and so complex. Foresty flavors here, along with tar, spice, dried red fruits, smoked meats and fire-pit. So much going on in this wine. While quite elegant and light, this still provides an impressive sensory experience. A fabulous wine, with a texture like liquid silk.

  • 1966 Château Lascombes 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Lovely wine; textbook aged claret. Soft, elegant and complex with filly resolved "melt-in-your-mouth" tannins.

  • 2001 Müller-Catoir Haardter Mandelring Scheurebe Spätlese 95 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

How long can Scheurebe cellar? I'm not sure I know, but this (along with the 1998) seem to show no signs of slowing down. So exotic, so showy, so much fun. An explosion of tropical fruits and herbs, held together with electric acids. A wild ride of a wine.
