Kevin's House

Gary A and I joined Kevin (rocknroller) at his place last night for a somewhat impromtu tasting with mostly BdX offerings. We ended up going pretty big with some killer wines that all showed in spectacular form. Kevin was kind enough to have some great food as well (shrimp and salmon) only adding to the wines and good company/conversation. The 5 hours went by like nothing. Kudos to Kevin for putting on this event!
NV Charles Ellner Champagne Grande Réserve Brut 90 Points

Nose: Lemons with prominent yeasty qualities and subtle chalk minerality. Palate: Fresh and Lively w/ the lemons and a very clean, medium length finish that is well balanced. 90+ points.

2007 Ken Wright Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 93 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
Nose: Dark red fruits (ripe Bing cherry and later cranberry) with a dusty quality. Great nose. Palate: Good acidity (typical of '07' OR wines) w/ the Bing cherry and velvety, dusty tannins showing. Finish is medium to long. After air time in bottle and glass this wine transformed several times with floral aromas trading off with the dusty red fruits. Really solid Ken Wright offering that is in the zone right now, but certainly can go for another year or so. My sense is it is at peak now and should maintain peak over the next year.

1994 Château Certan de May 94 Points
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Nose: Funky nose with mushroom and assorted herbs and very subtle blueberry undertones but the fruits are very substrate to the secondary aromas. After glass air black licorice, mocha hints, wet cement, road tar and red fruit aromas came through. After even more air time a perfumy aroma showed up....my God, what a nose! Palate: Mushrooms and dark fruits initially with French roast coffee that with air time showed almost more red fruited elements but they would come and go as once again this is mature BdX and the secondary elements are the main character in this story. It is not very often where I write a Tolstoy novel for a note but this wine was ethereal and clearly WOTN. While I generally like more fruit in my wines the trade off for such a unique tasting experience was well worth it. What a treat to try BdX wines of this age and worthy provenance. Thanks Kevin for opening this!

2004 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
2.5 hour triple decant (one hour in decanter at my place, back in bottle, and the remaining time in decanter at Kevin's). Nose: Big inky qualities initially with dark fruits, floral qualities and spice. Cedar and cassis elements appear with glass air time. At times this comes off as red fruited to me and then would be dark at other times so it was somewhat morphic, which I thought was very interesting. Palate: As with the nose interplay between red and dark fruits with dusty tannins and the cassis and spices showing. The extreme air time was very beneficial and my last notes (8/30/13) when the wine was only Vinituried into glass was a misstep on my part. My last bottle of this will see at least 3-4 years sideways before opening. Always liked Pontet and what the Tesseron family does with this wine. 92+ points.
