Great times and many laughs at Judith's 70th Birthday Party. As with any bring a bottle event some good, some average and some not worth drinking. Super cold night but the laughs and great food warmed us up.
NV Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut 89 Points
France, Champagne
Good but at almost $40 a bottle not something I would buy. Minerals, lemons, chalk and pear. Medium finish.

NV Marc Hébrart Champagne Premier Cru Cuvée de Réserve Brut 87 Points
France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
Another disappointing grower Champagne. This is a marketing segment of the wine industry similar to the buy local philosophy. I will find out later this month if these Grower Champagnes are even close to as good as the big Houses as a local distributor is having a big event to promote them. If this is an indication of the event I will be disappointed. Too much chalk and bitter along with minerals and lemons. Short to medium finish.

NV Roederer Estate Brut Rosé Anderson Valley 90 Points
USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
Much better than both Champagnes especially when you factor in the price. Strawberry, minerals, lemon and citrus. Medium finish and quite complex. Highly recommended along with the Regular Brut.

2011 Domaine Lafage Côtes du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors 84 Points
France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon
Just not something I would buy. Simple with egg dye, sweet fruit and simple. Simply floored that Parker gave this wine 93 points which is another example of his outrages palate as of late. All these $13 wines getting silly scores. While I do give out a few to wines in this price range the bulk (bulk wine) of these wines are mid 80s at best.

2008 Wind Gap Wines Rana 88 Points
USA, California
Just another wine tonight with strawberry, pepper, raspberries and minerals. I would advise aging these a few more years to see if there is more to the wine but for now just a simple effort.

Old World in style and rustic which I love. Leather, raspberries, minerals and spice. Medium finish and still possesses nice acidity. Balanced effort.

Needs time and might improve. Spices, leather, earth and underbrush. Medium finish. Not much fruit showing through this tannic wine.

2007 Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Sonoma County 83 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County
Just past peak and could be due to poor storage but this had muted fruit and damp earth. Previous bottle showed better but drinking window has closed on this one.

2008 Ravenswood Zinfandel Teldeschi 90 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
One of the better wines at this event with earth, red fruit, pepper and perfume. Medium finish and drink now.

2009 Carlisle Zinfandel Papera Ranch 92 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Now on to the good wines of the event. Nice nose of berries, spices, blueberries, minerals and forest floor. Not hot and super balanced effort. This should age nicely for five plus years. Decanted and 2 Vinturi's prior to drinking.

2005 Glaetzer Godolphin 94 Points
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Early candidate for top ten of 2014 and based on the $40 I paid for this it will be a strong contender. Unanimous wine of the night. Blueberries, boysenberries, floral, black pepper and minerals. About as balanced of an Aussie wine I have had in ages. This might get better.

2008 Kilikanoon Shiraz Covenant 91 Points
Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
Young and should develop over time. Dark color and features coffee beans, spices, minerals and red currants. Nose is really nice but the palate is a bit thin at this stage of the wine. Should hold for five years.

Excellent bottle of wine and improved one point over the course of the night. Strawberry, underbrush, subtle wood, mint and blueberries. Complex and balanced. No heat and no big jammy fruit. Recommended.
