Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 1994 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – Dusty nose, riper fruit, perhaps a warmer vintage? Still quite structured and somewhat primary on the palate. A delicious wine with a fairly open and approachable nose but the palate needs more time. Very good. 89+

  • 1993 Gigi Rosso Barolo Castelletto 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – Tightest of this flight but with some time in the glass it did open up to become the nicest nose of the flight. Delicate and a touch lean on the palate. I found the tannin and acid almost overpowered the fruit but not enough to really have a negative effect. Very good.

  • 1993 Carosso Barolo Vigna Bussia Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – At first the nose was very mushroomy but there are some VA/sherry notes that are quite off putting. I think this was an off bottle.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 1999 Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – Cooler fruit nose with mint, balsam, tar and riper fruit. There’s also a hint of cocoa on the nose as well. Great acidity with firm but somewhat approachable tannins. A complete and well balanced wine that needs 7-10 years. Excellent. 91+

  • 1997 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Prapò 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – Flashy and charming nose of riper (almost roasted) fruit and notes of French onion soup. There was a touch of volatility on the nose that added some lift. Loads of structure that I felt overpowered the fruit a bit. The nose on this ’97 was the most open of flight but it lacks the completeness and substance of the other two wines. Very good.

  • 1997 Prunotto Barolo Bussia 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – The nose here had some of us thinking perhaps this was a ringer (syrah) but after tasting the wine it was clearly nebbiolo (strong acidity and firm tannins). Nose offered earth notes of beef cubes, blood, black olives and dark and riper fruit. Quite youthful and like the ’97 Ceretto before it, the fruit verges on being roasted but doesn’t quite cross the line. Give this at least 5 more years. Excellent. 90+

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 1996 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – dark chocolate, raw hazelnut note that I'm not digging. Youthful but showing some earthy notes too. Somewhat dirty on the palate with muted darker fruits and earthy tones. Decent acid and tannins. I like more tar and roses in my nebbiolo and no so much earth. Perhaps this was an off bottle?

  • 1995 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Villero di Castiglione Falletto 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose shows very Burgundian and based on the nose, people thought this was a ringer. But on the palate shows all nebbiolo with sweeter red fruits, tar and loads of acid and tannins. Overall a very pretty wine but firm tannic structure. Can be enjoyed now but more to come in 5-7 years. Excellent. 92+

  • 1997 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind – dusty and floral nose with hints of roses and tar—a very classy and pretty nose. Structured on the palate but also elegant with its pretty red fruits and floral undertones. Finish is extremely long. My WOTN. Needs time but drinking well enough to warrant opening a bottle. Outstanding.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 1997 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind—this was very primary and was similar in ways to the previous wine (97 Giacosa Rocche del Falletto) but slightly darker and more masculine in profile. Also a touch more modern it seems. Even though this was extremely young, you can tell it will be an outstanding and complete wine with another 10 years in the cellar. Excellent. 92+

  • 1990 Elio Grasso Barolo Gavarini Chiniera 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind - young and rustic with a touch of VA on the nose. Riper but nothing overdone. Wow this is youthful and was shocked to see this was a 1990. The VA wasn’t off-putting and was so slight it almost added some complexity to the nose. This needs 10 years. Excellent. 91+

  • 1989 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Flawed

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served blind - this was an off bottle. Very disappointed once this was revealed.
