Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2012 Duxoup Gamay Noir Nancy's Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Red berry fruit, granite and purple flower. Very Gamay, but knowingly Valdiguie. Licorice, pepper, and a fresh kick. Very mineral.
Later that night, orange rind in chocolate. A playful, crystalline mint and herb oil aromas. All the same, simpler than all that conveys. Same can be said on the palate. Violet. Fresh.

  • 2012 Duxoup Sangiovese

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Planted in 1994, first vintage in 1999. Grown on terra rosa on the third bench up, mid valley, so rather cool. 'The terra rosa gives a cinnamon and allspice note.' 7% Cabernet Sauvignon planted right next to the Sangiovese. More cherry and darker cherry than the Gamay Noir '12. Quite dusty on the palat, with Chinese five spice. A little bit of new Hungarian oak.

  • 2012 Duxoup Syrah

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Orange rind and citrus zest to the aromas, hint of cream (vanilla). Cherry cream and lead pencil. A touch of new French oak is used in this wine.

  • 2011 Duxoup Charbono Frediani Vineyard

    USA, California, Napa Valley

12.0% ABV, but Andy says more like 11.7%. A little animal to the nose. 1/3 old vine, 2/3 new vine. The new vine is 57 years old, planted when Justin Meyer founded Franciscan. The old vine supposedly goes back to the founding of Inglenook in 1879. (more likely 1920 or 1935 when the Frediani's supposedly planted Charbono)
Red berry and blackberry aromas. Fruit salad, with ripe cranberry. A fresh and darker berry aspect to the palate. An old world-ness.
Also noted that in field blends of old, Carignane was always an indicator of when to spray because it would be the first to be affected by mildew. Same for roses at the end of a row.
At the end of the night, lots of blackberry. The 'animal' from earlier gets a little more medicinal.
This vintage is back in the BUY BUY BUY category.
