Introduction

Aussie Shiraz tasting with Michelle at 1855 followed by quick dinner meet-up with X-country team-mates, and then rushed to UE Sqaure Straits Wine for Friday night drinks.

Flight 1 - Aussie Shiraz Tasting (4 Notes)

  • 2006 Geoff Merrill Shiraz Reserve

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Appearance is clear deep ruby colour.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity with aromas of coffee, dark fruit, mild spice, and some soy notes.
Medium acidity with high tannins, but smooth and integrated already. Full bodied with nice mouth-feel. Flavours of blueberries and licorice. Long finish.
Quite ready to drink. Could go well for another 3-5 years.

  • 2011 Voyager Estate Shiraz

Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Appearance is clear deep purple colour.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of dark fruits and mild vanilla oak.
Medium+ acidity and high tannins. Full bodied with flavours of blackberries and lots of spice. Long finish. Much better than the 2009 bottle I had previously, which I suspect had reductive notes. This is nice and promising, still quite young and primary.

  • 2008 Brown Brothers Shiraz Patricia

    Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria

    Appearance is clear medium ruby.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with strong fragrant aromas of sweet red and dark berries.
High acidity, medium+ tannins and medium-bodied. Elegant, even slightly muted style. Red fruits and light spice. Medium-long finish.
Not sure if the wine is sleeping? Nice nose but too light on the palate.

  • 2011 Tempus Two Shiraz Pewter

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Appearance is clear deep purple.
Nose is clean, pronounced, and overwhelming with pepper, spice and oak.
Medium acidity, high big tannins. Lots of pepper, spice, and cassis, but overall the wines doesn't seem balanced. Long finish.

Flight 2 - Friday Wine Night at UE Straits Wine (3 Notes)

  • 2011 Domaine Cornu Ladoix 1er Cru Bois Roussot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Ladoix 1er Cru

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour.
Nose is clean medium intensity, with aromas of mushrooms.
High acidity, low tannins and medium- body. Lots of primary flavours of red fruits especially strawberries. Spice on the long finish. With more air, opened up to reveal more sweet earthy notes.
I was spot on for 2011 Burgundy, however just couldn't figure out where within Burgundy. My first time trying a Burg from Ladoix in the Cote de Beaune.

  • 2005 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Imperial Gran Reserva 90 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour.
Nose is clean and pronounced with oak dominated aroma.
Medium acidity, lots of drying tannins, and a full body, with lots of flavours of primary red fruit, and creamy vanilla oak. Medium finish. With more air, sweet plum flavours emerged.
I guessed a relatively young Rioja Gran Reserva.
This will need a few more years to integrate.

  • 2006 Còlpetrone Montefalco Sagrantino 92 Points

    Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino

Appearance is clear deep dark purple.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with strong aromas of vanilla oak, sweet soy, and dark fruits.
On the palate, medium acidity, high level of tannins, and a big full body. Complex flavours of big brooding sweet dark fruits, tons of black pepper and spice, smoky tobacco notes, and a slight green leafy undertone.
I guessed a young Aussie Shiraz-dominated Shiraz/Cabernet blend. My virgin experience with Sagrantino.
This is still young and tight, but so full of potential for the future. Keep in your cellar and forget for a good many years.
