Introduction

This was a trade tasting that many members of the Chicago Wine Mafia were able to attend. No First growths but some excellent wines.

Flight 1 - Haut-Medoc, etc. (5 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Cantemerle 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Tried this in Jan. 2003. In addition to berries it had a nutty aroma. The wine was filled with rich fruit and had a full mouth feel. I noted boysenberry, raw meat and dark chocolate in this medium to full bodied wine. Silky tannins. 92-93 points

  • 2000 Château Haut Nadeau Cuvée Prestige 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Supérieur

    If you like coffee this is the wine for you. Open a bottle of this in the morning and your spouse will think that you put the coffee on. A strong burnt coffee nose with dark fruit notes. Medium bodied. Nice value. 87.

  • 2000 Château Beaumont 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

    Dark reddish purple color. Bitter fruit on the nose. Notes of cherry, dark berries and toasty oak. Medium bodied. My wife liked this more than I did. 89-90 points.

  • 2000 Château L'Argenteyre 84 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc

    It is made from 40 year old vines and is 55% Merlot, 40% Cab Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. This wine was all bitter tannin and very difficult to score now. The bottle had been open for 2 hours when I tried it. Some wet earth and leather notes now with all of the fruit hidden. Not sure what to make of this. 83-85+ points.

    Made by Michel Rolland. Plenty of coffee on the nose. Big and tannic. Notes of mushroom, raw meat and crushed grape skins. 89+.

  • 2000 Château de Fieuzal 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    The cepage is 60% Cab Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The nose was filled with blueberry and coffee. I noted balck cherry in this medium bodied wine. 89-90 points.

  • 2000 Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    This deep red offering had a gamey nose and long thin legs. The full firm tannins were accompanied by notes of plum, meat, wet earth and roasted coffee beans. 91 points.

  • 2000 Château Smith Haut Lafitte 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

    Dark reddish burgundy color. One of the more backward wines at this time. Bitter aromas of black mushroom, berry and oriental spice. Notes of cherry, tobacco and full mouth feel. The finish was shorter than other wines at the tasting and it was a little dry on the finish. It will come around though. 91-92 points.

Flight 3 - Pauillac (5 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Pontet-Canet 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Primarily Cab Sauvignon with 2% Petit Verdot added. Dark reddish purple. Bitter fruit with mocha and leather on the nose. A complex wine with notes of sweet red fruit and sharp tannins. 92-93 points.

  • 2000 Château Lynch-Bages 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    Tried this in Jan 2003. 75% Cab Sauvignon, 10% Cab Franc and 15% Merlot. The best wine of the tasting. Thick wide legs. An earthy leather filled nose. A soft supple wine with black cherry and coffee notes. It finished with a delicious burst of fruit. A well balanced wine with intricate fruit nuances and elegant tannins. 96 points.

  • 2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

    The cepage is 75% Cab Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 3% Cab Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot. Aromas of crushed grape skins and chocolate with a hint of carmel. Sweet, sweet fruit with notes of plum and blackberry upfront and cassis on the finish. Dry but integrated tannins. Good balance and a medium to long finish. 94-95 points.

  • 2000 Château Haut-Bages Libéral 92 Points

    Gift of a case from Chris for my 39th birthday. The cepage for the 2000 is 80% Cab Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. It had an herbal and hayfield nose. Notes of black fruit and currant. Sharp firm tannins and a long finish. 92 points.

    Medium to full bodied and chunkier than the 1996 version. Notes of leather, black fruit and raspberry. Tannic. 90.

  • 2000 Château Gruaud Larose 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    Won this from Keith Scott in a bet when the Cubs triumphed over the Cards in 2003. Tried this in Jan. 2003. Big tannic wine with mouth puckering tannins. Deep rich red color. It had an earthy mushroomy nose. Powerful berry, chocolate and cassis notes. 93-95.

  • 2000 Château Léoville Poyferré 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    2nd Growth. Decanter 4* with maturity of 2008-2030. Tried this in Jan 2003. 86% Cab Sauvignon and 14% Merlot. Quite a unique nose of lavender and rose petals with secondary nuances of wet earth. Silky tannins upfront. Notes of toasted oak, earth, chocolate and cassis. Medium to full bodied with a good moderately long finish. 93-94 points.

  • 2000 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru) 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    The cepage is 70% Cab Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cab Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Nice dark red color. This had a sweet candied fruit nose with rasberries predominant. On the palate I noted tobacco, plum and anise. This was a well integrated wine with a long finish. 91-93 points.

  • 2000 Château Ferrière 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    The cepage is 75% Cab Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. The wine gets 50% new oak. It had a gamey nose with a good amount of fruit on the palate. Notes included grape skins and dark chocolate. Dry tannins on the long finish. 92-93 points.

    An old world style wine. Some funk on the nose but not unpleasant. Firm tannins and full bodied. Notes of crushed grape skins, mushroom and leather. 90-93 points.

  • 2000 Château Brane-Cantenac 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

    Nose of crushed grape skins and cassis. Flavors of tart raspberry, cherry and pomegranite (the latter being my wifes contribution since I have never had a pomegranite). This wine had gripping tannins and was medium bodied. I liked it. 92-93 points.

    Reddish black color with an earthy nose. A sharp focused wine with notes of dark fruit, licorice and blackberry. Medium bodied. Not as big as some of the other Bordeaux at the tasting. 90-91 points.

Flight 7 - St. Émilion (9 Notes)

  • 2000 Château Cantenac 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    Inky black color. A toffee filled nose. This full bodied wine was tight with very firm tannins. Cassis and cherry notes. 88.

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Georges-St. Émilion

    Coffee was again present on the nose but much less than the previous wine. Dry tannins. Black fruit notes with a somewhat simple but pleasant finish. 86-87.

    From St. Emilion. Not decanted. Very tannic and closed but it had a good structure, nose, color and length. I think this will be an outstanding wine when it comes around. 90+.

    Fantastic nose filled with sweet juicy fruit. This had silky tannins and a long caressing finish. I noted plum and chocolate. many people I talked to thought this was there favorite. It was my #2 after the Lynch. 95 points.

  • 2000 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

    The cepage is 70% Merlot, 24% Cab Franc and 15% Cab Sauvignon. WS89-91 and WA92-94+. It had a distinctly stong coffee nose. Mouth filling flavors of black cherry, grean tea, and licorice. Big powerful tannins. This is for those who like monster wines which is not quite my style. I'm leaning toward WS on this one. 90-91 points.

    A nice dark reddish purple color. Rich red fruit similar to the Franc Mayne but with much more depth and with an earthy and coffeelike edge. Medium bodied. 91-92 points.

    The cepage was 70% merlot and 30% Cab Franc. The nose was slightly bitter with licorice and dark fruit. It had a full mouth feel with notes of cassis and tobacco. Nice finish. 91 points.

    1st growth Sauternes. Tried the 2000 vintage of this wine in Jan 2003. It had a fantastic nose filled with candied peaches, green apple and custard. Flavors of pineapple, other tropical fruit and vanilla swirled on the palate. 93-94 points.

    This wine was nice but disappointing for a Premier Cru Classe Sauternes. Freshly picked apricots on the nose followed by flavors of carmel and orchard fruit. 87 points.
