Introduction

The weather was rocking, so I got together at Weygandt Wines for a tasting, and then cooked dinner with some friends. Good wines, good times.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2013 Château de la Bonneliere Chinon Rosé 87 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Strawberry, floral aromas. Tart red berries on the palate, with a lean approach and lots of minerals and acid. No underripe flavors, but showing tartness and freshness.

  • 2012 Serge Dagueneau Pouilly-Fumé Les Pentes 88 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé

Lots of flowers and sea shells, with nice citrus and sea salt notes. Slightly less impressed by this bottle.

    Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano

Pineapple and banana, not much else, lacking acidity for my palate.

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras

Chunky pineapple and oily notes, lacking verve and complexity.

  • 2012 Domaine Le Clos des Cazaux Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes Blanc 79 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras

Ever richer than the other cuvee from this producer. Smells like Virginia Viognier with intense floral notes, but it's really oily, almost baked on the palate, with rich nutty notes.

  • 2000 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Vignes de Mon Père 94 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

What a cool wine. Color of dried honey with some spritz in the glass. Smells like my wetsuit after surfing in winter on the East Coast, with sea brine and jetty rocks and seashells all thrown together, and I love it. The acid rips across the palate, and the lemon seed and green melon notes are strong and complex, backed up by mineral, white tea and all sorts of green herbs and pickling spices. Not for the unadventurous, but I think this wine slays.

  • 2011 Domaine de la Pinte Pinot Noir Arbois 89 Points

    France, Jura, Arbois

Such a fun wine. Bright red fruit but lots of minerals and spices. This Pinot Noir is made for Peter Weygandt, as the grapes usually go into the A la Capitaine blend. Glad some of the Pinot grapes made it into the bottle because this is very pretty.

  • 2011 Domaine Philippe Charlopin Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Love the aromatic intensity, floral, tart berries. Silky on the palate with fresh floral notes on top of tart berries, minerals, some pleasant spice and limestone. Fine tannins, superb acid. Very expressive at this point but clearly stuffing to age.

  • 2013 Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc 84 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

I used most of this to cook mussels, but sipped some. Not bad, showing white peach, green grass, papaya and some light spice. Fresh and clean.

  • 1983 E. Guigal Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

At 30 years old, it's all about the provenance. This bottle was in good condition and the wine was still going strong, although it's got lots of really mature flavors. Smells of green olives, red peppers, seaweed and blood. Fine, silky tannins with tart acid. Tart red fruit is slathered in roasted red pepper, black and green olives, sun-dried tomato and pickling spices. I get lots of meat and iron and dried herbs, but the wine is fresh from the acid. After three hours, this really started showing some more floral and crushed rocks. Paired with slow cooked pork loin and enjoyed the hell out of this birth-year Hermitage. Perhaps not for everyone, but I don't think this bottle was over the hill by any means.

  • 1992 The Terraces Cabernet Sauvignon 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

A kind of raisin-plum skin color. Smells of plum cake, raisins, roses and currant jam. Still going on the palate with dusty tannins and medium acid. Currants and blackberries taste jammy and sweet, mixed with tobacco, black olive, peppercorn. I get some fig cookie and sweet vanilla on the finish, and I like the way the herbal and earthy flavors mix in. Still holding up if good provenance.

  • 2006 Copain Syrah Les Voisins McDowell Valley 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, McDowell Valley

Black and dark red fruit, peppery spice and sweet violet and some mocha notes. Palate shows a fleshy, creamy texture, with bright red and black currant fruit. I like the sweet spice and barbecue sauce, with notes of black pepper and coffee bean. Fleshy and rich but also tangy from the acid. With time bacon grease and black pepper sauce flavors come out. Very clean and focused, while being rich and juicy at the same time. Better on Day 2. For my palate, Copain Syrahs always come through. Drink or hold for a few more.
