Flight 1 - Whites and bubbly (3 Notes)

  • 2011 Concha y Toro Sauvignon Blanc Terrunyo Los Boldos Vineyard Block 5 89 Points

    Chile, Casablanca Valley

I like the nose, intense and very expressive, lots of fresh cut grass and wild gooseberries. The palate has a nice wild fruit core wrap by layers of herbaceous, grassy notes. High in acidity but fresh. Showing better mid-palate weight than previous tasting. Finishing well too. It is a nice Chilean Sauvignon Blanc but some people may find it too herbaceous and high in acidity. It definitely taste better with food today.

  • NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cuvée Brut 89 Points

    France, Champagne

A fairy nice bubbly and unmistakably Champagne with notes of yeasty, lemon citrussy. Good freshness and length. Not impressive but drinking well, this is what I expect from a widely available Champagne.

  • 2009 Tabalí Chardonnay Talinay 90 Points

    Chile, Limarí Valley

Tasted blind. A little chilled and tight when it was poured, orange peel, citrus, slight funky with subtle vanilla oak. It opens up more after 1 hour and warm up a bit to show plenty of citrus, pineapple and pear. It has a good balance on palate and the oak is very well integrated , fresh acidity with flavours of ripe pear and pineapple. Nice length on finish and this is a pretty well made wine.

  • NV Viña Valdivieso Caballo Loco No 11 91 Points

    Chile, Curico Valley, Lontué Valley

Brought to the BYO blind tasting. Dark ruby core with slight crimson/brick red rims, showing a developed, subtle and elegant nose, earthy red fruits, graphite, smoke and sweet licorice. Soft velvety entry, sweet smoky fruits, blackcurrant, red berries, licorice interwoven with rustic earthy tones, tobacco and hints of herbaceous. Complex and harmony, with balance acidity brings out the long lingering finish with hints of spice. Smooth and fine tannins. Drinking nicely now.

  • 2007 Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Malbec 91 Points

    Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco

Tasted blind, dark inky black with youthful purple rims. Power nose and very much alcohol driven, ripe black fruits and oak dominant, along with dark cherries, black licorice and hints of plum. Dense and rich mouth-feel, full bodied but a little pungent, meaty palate with ripe fruits, smoky oak and sweet licorice. Solid structure and mid-palate, firm grippy tannins with long finish. Still very young at the moment and need at least another 3 to 5 years to let the alcohol settle down as the 15.5% ABV is out of control at the moment. It has an interesting French touch given the owner of this winery also own Chateau Leoville Poyferre.

  • 2012 Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir Cincuenta y Cinco 89 Points

    Argentina, Patagonia

Tasted blind, medium ruby red. Jammy red fruits nose of strawberries, raspberries and red cherries with just a touch of smoky oak. Soft and fruity, along with rich sweet fruits and red fruits that also show on the nose. A bit one dimensional and lack of depth. While it is not difficult to tell it is a Pinot Noir, I have no idea this wine comes from which country. It has a clean fruity expression that is very singular and interesting.
