Introduction

2 Beaujolais Crus from 2011 and a Pinot Noir. Lighter styles from the usual heavy hitting fare.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2011 Pierre-Marie Chermette Moulin-à-Vent Les Trois Roches 93 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent

Slow-oxed in bottle for about an hour+ before drinking.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, purple colour.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of charred oak, floral scents, and a mix of red and black fruits. Developing nose. Very nice and complex.
On the palate, high acidity, medium- alcohol, low tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherries, raspberry, black cherries, blackberry, earth, minerality, and cinnamon spice. Medium+ finish.
One of the deepest and most complex Beaujolais Cru I have drank so far.
Outstanding quality. Can drink now with air, but has the potential to improve over the next 5 years.

  • 2011 Jean-Paul Thevenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Maybe I was too generous with the points previously or this bottle just didn't perform as well as my previous experience with it.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of perfumed flowers, bright red fruit (raspberries, red cherries), and light oak. Youthful.
On the palate, high acidity, low alcohol, low tannins, medium- body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherries, raspberries, floral essences, and sweet earth. Medium finish. Very bright and refreshing mouth-feel.
Very good quality. Can drink now, but has he potential to age well over the next few years.
Made biodynamically from two parcels of vines, one 45 years old and the other 110 years old (planted before World War I).

  • 2006 Our Cellars Pinot Noir Paen Valley 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

    Tasted blind.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet colour.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of sweet earth, clay, nicely integrated oak, and red fruit (raspberry and plum). Developed nose.
On the palate, high acidity, high alcohol, soft medium tannins, medium+ body (almost on the cusp of full body). Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of licorice, raspberry, plum, blackberry, and very nice clayey earth. Long finish.
I had a sneaky suspicion that this could be a US Pinot Noir in a fuller style. But in the end, based on the flavour profile, I went with my guess of an aged Southern Rhone Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Very good quality. Drink now, why wait.
