A Tasting at Ridge

Introduction

A tasting at Ridge is always the second stop on our first day in wine country. We participated in the Century Tour, taking a short ride through the vineyard followed by a walk through the barrel and tank rooms and ending with a seated tasting comparing new release and older bottlings.

Flight 1 - Barrel samples... (3 Notes)

  • 2013 Ridge Zinfandel Buchignani Ranch 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    Barrel sample. Really bright and fruit-forward with aromas of boysenberry, raspberry and red fruit with a fun grapey/jammy edge to it. Full and exuberant with an abundance of bright red fruit on the palate. Has just a faint meaty quality on the finish. I loved this. 92+ pts.

  • 2013 Ridge Zinfandel East Bench 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    Barrel sample. Cherry, raspberry and violet aromas with subtle spice tones. Medium-bodied with boysenberry and red fruit on the palate, ending with hints of pepper. Good underlying acidity; balanced.

  • 2013 Ridge Petite Sirah Lytton Estate 88 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    Barrel sample. Aromas of blue fruit, blackberry and chocolate. Firm tannins with black fruit and chocolate flavors; vanilla and spice on the finish.

Flight 2 - Seated tasing (6 Notes)

  • 2011 Ridge Lytton Springs 90 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    Deep garnet. Dusty red fruit, white pepper and spices; loads of red fruit, turning bright and more exuberant as it sits. The palate follows the bouquet- loads of bright red fruit ending with a nice bit of spice. Nice fiinsh.

  • 2007 Ridge Lytton Springs 91 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    Faded garnet color. Notes of red currant, white pepper, dried earth and florals. Elegant. Lovely fruit on the palate with an earthy/dusty edge. Tannins are still young but beginning to integrate. Lengthy finish dominated by red fruit and white pepper. 91+ pts.

  • 2010 Ridge Syrah/Grenache Lytton Estate 92 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    Dark color. The bouquet opens with a lovely perfumed floral profile turning to white currants, cherry and eventually blue fruit. Tannins are young and firm. Red fruit and berry qualities with a bit of spice coming in on the finish. 92+ pts.

  • 2004 Ridge Syrah Lytton Estate 87 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

    Deep core with a light meniscus. Aromas of wood, cedar and red fruit, cinnamon and meat. Medium-bodied with flavors of dried earth, red fruit and spice. Still quite tannic and even a bit austere.

  • 2010 Ridge Monte Bello 95 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Inky red color with aromas of violets, caramel, black fruit- cassis, and vanilla. Full-bodied but so elegant and refined. Cassis, blue fruit, caramel, vanilla, spice and lavender. Lingering finish. So well-balanced; wonderful. 95-96 pts.

  • 2000 Ridge Monte Bello 89 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    "Opened" via the Coravin. Inky crimson core fading towards the meniscus. Aromas of currants, dust, cedar, rose hips, lavender and just a hint of tobacco. Flavors of red currants, dusty earth, cedar and cherry. Balanced, with a nice finish.

Flight 3 - Bonus pours... (1 Note)

Our host poured a couple of extra wines for us before we left, though i only tasted the Chard.

  • 2012 Ridge Chardonnay Estate 92 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Rich aromatics with apple, florals and just a hint of coconut. The palate opens with coconut and a soft toast, then orchard fruit and a hint of citrus. Long finish. 92-93 pts.
