Introduction

Hans Krueger Selections included wines from Siduri, Panther Creek, Matthew Cellars, Laetitia, and Nicholas Cole.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2005 Panther Creek Pinot Gris 90 Points

    USA, Oregon

Arrived late to the tasting so this one had been open and had warmed up a bit. Huge honeysuckle, mango, banana, and orange blossoms on the nose. Intense medium-full bodied tropical fruits, with melon, and peach on the palate. Soft at first, then finishes with a burst of acidity that cleanses the palate. Rich and ripe overall. 90+

  • 2005 Laetitia Winery Pinot Noir Reserve 85 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Valley

Very nice light purple hue with pink highlights. Ripe wild berries on the nose with some warm spices like cinnamon and cloves. Oak up front on palate, again with warm spices, toast, and black raspberries. Light-medium bodied with moderate acidity. The usual pinot noir characteristics overall, somewhat boring, yet nothing offensive.

  • 2003 Panther Creek Pinot Noir Temperance Hill 88 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Hints of brick or rust color. Initial nose of horse butt and barnyard with truffles and dried cranberries. Palate is of earth, spice, new oak, and raspberries. Finishes with a peppery spice and nice acidity. The body is medium with some definite tannins present, and adds to the mouth feel. If the barnyard were to blow off the nose, or at least soften, it would be a little more enjoyable.

  • 2003 Panther Creek Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Deep black cherry in colour. Earth, oak, prunes on the nose with a subtle vanilla and leathery characteristic. Fuller bodied than the previous P.C. Pinot tasted. Grippier tannins that give a dusty note with more intensity overall. Dried black cherries on the palate with oak, earth, and cranberry on the mid and back palate. Lower acidity also. Liked better than P.C. Temperance Hill Vyd.

  • 2005 Siduri Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 84 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Very light, almost thin color of garnet. First impression of the nose was dominated by oak, and probably new American oak. As it opens, underripe raspberries, stemminess, and green bell pepper show through the oak. The palate does not reflect the nose, nor the color. Soft and medium bodied, this packs loads of warm spices, fresh raspberries, and still a large amount of oak and oak spice. Definitely softer in style than the first few Pinots tasted with no tannins whatsoever and exceptional balance of acidity. Pretty much everything except the nose was enjoyable. 84-86

  • 2004 Nicholas Cole Cellars GraEagle Red Wing 79 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Colffee colour with black highlights. Black plum, coffee, and bitter chocolate on the nose. Huge gulp of alcohol up front, tobacco, and gripping tannins. The fruit component on the palate is all over the place, not being able to put a finger on what I was tasting. First Nic. Cole wine ever tasted, and so far not too impressed.

  • 2003 Nicholas Cole Cellars Camille 85 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Definitely a step up from the GraEagle tasted earlier. More fruit on this one with black cherry, red currants, some tobacco, and well integrated tannins. Nose was a bit vegetal with dried herbs and green pepper. Finishes with a touch of bitterness. Oak is also well integrated and not too up front or overwhelming. Good, but still not impressed.

  • 2002 Matthews Red Wine 88 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Deep ruby color, almost black. Huge nose of black cherries, some smoke, and toast. Palate is rich with black currants, mocha, and new oak. Not too complex, yet it is very enjoyable, but over priced. A step up from their Claret with better tannin structure and intensity. However QPR's aren't even close. Claret is a better value.

  • 2004 Matthews Syrah 91 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Wow. Not what I expected by any means. Deep and intense colour of purple, almost inky. Bright plums, blackberries and oak on nose. Palate is of jammy blackberries with creamy blueberries towards finish, along with bright acidity. Only a subtle hint of pepperiness towards the back palate. Overall very nice. Definitely not like other WA Syrahs that I am used to. 91+
