Flight 1 (1 Note)

Canapés

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Roast scallops with asparagus and mousserons

  • 2007 Les Vins de Vienne Condrieu La Chambée 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Bother, managed to bring the wrong 07 Condrieu. A green-tinged bright mid yellow. Viognier floral on the nose albeit on a slightly subdued manner. A touch oily but not over done. Manages to retain some freshness. I prefer this slightly calmer, aged version of the grape. ***

  • 2007 Domaine de Trévallon Blanc 89 Points

    France, Provence, Alpilles

Full old gold. Just a hint of oxidation on the nose. Unctuous and oily. A touch of vanilla. Lovely texture but lacks complexity. Think I preferred this in its relative youth with aromatic fireworks. ***

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

Herd wick lamb with salt-baked turnips, ewe's milk and garlic

  • 1996 Château Palmer 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Richer on the nose cf the Ducru, as expected. Less dense, rounder, more floral and ever so slightly exotic. The merlot is really showing at the moment. Again, needs time. All there, but come back in 2020. ***(*)

  • 1996 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Classic cedar and blackcurrant nose. Dense. Slightly brooding. Classic St Julien. Still quite dense. A dry, still tannic finish. Oodles of promise but come back in a decade. **(**)

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

Aged fillet of Belted Galloway with celeriac baked in juniper, bone marrow and crisp potato

  • 1999 Andrew Will Cabernet Sauvignon Ciel du Cheval Vineyard 90 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain

Slightly dusty, creamy nose. Quite coffee-scented. Smooth. Quite rich. A little more modern, but quite attractive if a fraction hot on the finish. Qualitatively similar to the rest of the flight; stylistic differences to the fore. All gave a similar dryness after 45mins or so. ***(1/2)

  • 1998 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill 90 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

Quite an enticing nose. Mineral with some spice. A slightly green edge. Dense and quite dry. Some spice here. Again, a touch of heat on the finish. Currently more interesting than the Will. ***1/3

  • 2002 Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Estate 91 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Quite a savoury nose. Blackcurrant with a menthol mineral edge. Rich fruit on the attack. A touch of Madeira cake (in a balanced way). Nicely balanced. Again, a touch of heat but it wears it well. Again, needs time. ***(*)

Flight 5 (1 Note)

Warm custard toast with apricots and mead

  • 1959 Château Climens 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Beautiful deep amber. Barley sugar on the nose. Far drier on the palate. This bottle has pretty much consumed its sugar. Amontillado without the depth or intensity. A little on the slide it if not expecting sweetness there's interest here. A wine to sip and contemplate. ***
