France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine
Mineral, fresh, apple, flowers, citrus, fresh mushroom, seems to lack a bit of tension and stuffing, quite closed, hint of salinity, very individual, better than the previous bottle, good length, hint of white almond.
France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine
Magnum. Fabulous wine, intense, elegant and precise, blossom, white fruit, sea shell, ripe lemon, energetic, long. Unfortunately there also is a raw impurity that makes it impossible to rate this wine.
Clay, chalk, gravelly topsoil. Minerals, yellow apple, hint of spice, nice depth but one-dimensional and slightly hollow; the palate is soft and lacks tension and energy, hint of nuttiness, nice length. Too old.
Classic, harmonious, complete, lovely complexity, hint of box but calm, pineapple and citrus zest, grapefruit, energy and minerals, intense and lively, excellent bitters, lovely length.
A 0.9 ha parcel. Harmonious, intense, tightly wound, toasted nuts, extremely pure and precise, quite closed but with wonderful depth, calm and balanced, salty minerality, subtle tropical fruit flavours, ripe acidity, spice, very good length.
A parcel of 1.3 ha, 25 year old vines. Richer and riper style than the Culs de Beaujeu, some unresolved residual sugar, ripe acidity, quite big, powerful, apricot, flirting with mildness, great minerality on the finish, complex, still unformed, warm (14.5% ABV) hint of heat on the finish. Needs time.
A parcel of 0.9 ha, 45 year old vines. Even bigger and more powerful than the Monts Damnés, very closed but very concentrated, rich and alcoholic (but only 14% ABV), earth and rock, very deep, noticeable bitters, masculine, unformed, great intensity and length. If it comes together, this will be very good. Score based on potential.
Still too young but wonderfully harmonious, almost a light dessert wine, voluptuous but wonderfully integrated, hint of fennel, deep and concentrated, very long. A truly great Sancerre, lovely now but will need decades to reach its apogee.
Poulsard grape juice and Marc. Deliciously rich and raw and spicy, delicately sweet, bittersweet, spicy like a Carpano Martini, finishes like a magnificent Manhattan cocktail (perfect, straight up).
