Rhone wines tasted at Glengarry Wines and a couple of additional Rhone wines of interest drunk at home afterwards.
Glengarry Tasting.
A couple of additional wines drunk at home that added further nuance to the tasting.
2010 Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie 89 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
(5/31/2014)
Bright ruby - plush texture with an expressive fruit dominant style. Typical of the appellation with pretty and pure fruit and a medium body. Some smoke and leather, candy cane. 100% destemmed fruit, 18 minths in 50% new oak, which does not show, except perhaps in the slightly modern feel to the wine. A refined wine.

2010 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Terres Sombres 91 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
(5/31/2014)
Very toasted oak - pain grille, ripe, candied raspberry and caramel. Modern, plush texture, smooth as silk with lots of toast character. The finish shows a slight sour oak component.18 months in barrique.

2010 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie Cuvée Classique Ampodium 91 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
(5/31/2014)
Bright purple - ruby. Less toasted than the Cuilleron Terres Sombres of the same vintage. Earthy nose with some leather. More depth of flavour. Noticeably extracted, this wine has a slightly astringent finish and is very well structured. The wine still enjoys a smooth texture above the tannin. There is plenty of classy fruit and this will be a fine wine to watch develop.

2009 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline 94 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
(6/1/2014)
Dense purple. Masses of new French oak. Beautiful balance and concentration although the oak gives it an almost Rioja-like feel. Great texture - quite jammy, multi-layered with a massive texture. I very much enjoy the minerality. Objectively, this is certainly a very great wine, but it does not speak of Cote Rotie for me. Rather it is a very modern, oak dominant style that obviously has its adherents. Not close to being the top wine in this tasting, for m tastes. It will be interesting to see if the oak is subsumed into fruit with age.... 94+

2006 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 93 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
(6/1/2014)
Dense ruby with hints of rust. Spicy old-school syrah nose that was a relief after the overblown aromatics of the Guigal La Mouline 2009 tasted beforehand. Leathery nuance and hints of black olive give way to a wine that is currently drinking very well with a sweet and spicy currant liqueur palate. This will certainly last and improve with additional time in the cellar. Tannic and slightly rustic in style, this wine has great class.

2008 Te Motu Syrah Tipua 90 Points
New Zealand, North Island, Auckland, Waiheke Island
(6/1/2014)
blind, next to the Clape 2006 Cornas, this wine was universally acclaimed at the tasting and no one picked the wine as a Kiwi ringer. I pumped for Languedoc as it felt slightly more opaque than the Northern Rhone. Dense ruby/purple with hints of age. Very ripe and spicy syrah nose - dust, spice, candy cane. Drinks very well with hints of rubber in a very ripe style with plenty of syrah stink and leather. Great wine and completely French in style. Excellent!

2010 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 97 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
(6/1/2014)
Dense purple - ruby (not quite the black of the 1990 tasted at a similar stage!). Black nose with deep smoke nuance. Very dumb, dark and primary. In the mouth, very liqueur-lije, hugely tannic and hugely concentrated Hints of curry spice in the textbook definition. Excellent fruit/oak balance (20% new), this is classic hermitage that is massive and slightly monolithic at the moment. All that is required is a minimum of 20 years. Great wine and completely true to its appellation.

2007 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 95 Points
France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
(6/1/2014)
Age is apparent on this wine - dense ruby with some tawny hints. Old school wine with beautiful balance and great fruit. Very structured style that is likely always to be on the tannic side but has a wonderful savory nature. This is a wine with a strong personality that is complete and a great example of the vintage.

2010 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 94 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(6/1/2014)
Young purple. Modern (for a Beaucastel) in style, fat and detailed. Open, but with distinct leathery, stemmy and earthy nuance. This is clean as a whistle but has great clarity and cut. Fabulous wine. 94-95

2009 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin 97 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
(6/1/2014)
Dense purple/black. Closed nose that with coaxing becomes very animal. Leather and forest floor notes abound. Very ripe with some jam, tree bark palate. Super structured - just a baby. Easily the bext 2009 CNdP I've drunk, 97+++
