Tasting at Domaine Huet and Domaine du Clos Naudin

Spending summer vacation in the region and not knowing a lot about Loire whites, decided to do a tasting at Domaine Huet and Foreau (which is just vis-à-vis). Not the most thorough tasting notes as I am not really familiar with the wines and was there with family and kids.

  Pale yellow. Nice nose with some grass. Rather straight forward on the palate. Nice but nothing to write home about

• 2012 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Mont 88 Points

  Pale yellow. Compared to the 2012 Clos du Bourg, le Mont was a bit denser and a bit oily on the palate. Or to put it differently, this was more settled but lacked some of the crisp acidity and freshness.

• 2007 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Mont 91 Points

  This was a clear step-up compared to those 2012/2013 sec. A pretty nose, with something similar to the petrol in Riesling. On the palate clearly sweeter but also more complex than the earlier wine.

  A notch above the 07 Le Mont Demi-Sec in my eyes, more expressive and again a touch sweeter. We ended up taking a few bottles

  Strong nose of something similar to petrol and lychee. More sweet, exotic fruit on the palate. This is excellent but perhaps a touch too sweet and perhaps too expressive to combine with food for my taste.

  While not the most expressive, this was probably the wine I liked best in the tasting. Great balance of acidity and sweetness, and fruit and structure. Excellent.

  Moving over to Clos Naudin and obviously having just tasted Huet's best wines, this first Foreau was rather disappointing. High acidity and lacking balance, or to put it simple a sour wine that was produced from fruit that just did not get to the right ripeness.

  A big step up from the 2012 sec. This is a compact wine, still a bit closed in my eyes but with good depth and complexity. Took a bottle out of curiosity to see how it develops. 91+

  Sweeter and brighter than the 2005 demi-sec. Definitively more approachable but might not have the depth. Took a bottle as well.

Preferred Huet to Clos Naudin as the wines were more expressive. While there were several very nice to excellent wines I find Burgundy whites more refined and elegant.
